Big 5th round for Fonfara. Ngumbu did well to survive it.

    48-47 Fonfara

    Round 5

Clinch. Right hand by Ngumbu, wedged into Fonfara's throat, but eating a counter jab as Fonfara leans back. Ngumbu bashes into Fonfara's guard with right hands. Nice left uppercut ripping into the body by Ngumbu. Fonfara backs into the ropes and throws a few underhanded body shots before holding. BIG right hand by Fonfara. Ngumbu is laid against the ropes, slumped. Fonfara runs up to him and clubs with rights. Ngumbu holds. No count by the ref, letting them go at it. Ngumbu keeps tying Fonfara up. Big chopping right by Fonfara. Well over a minute remaining. Ngumbu clinches. Fonfara's arms get pinned down and he waits for a break. Fonfara pursues Ngumbu into a corner and takes a jab on the nose, blinking. Left hook on the body by Fonfara. Big left hook by Fonfara, winding around the base of Ngumbu's neck. Fonfara doubles his jab and throws a hard right cross, missing and nearly falling through the ropes as Ngumbu rolls to the side. Clubbing right by Fonfara. Double left hook downstairs by Fonfara.

    10-8 Fonfara

    48-46 Fonfara

  3. Ngumbu coming out with a ridiculous amount of vaseline on his face this round.

I thought Fonfara was a little too patient when he had Stevenson on the brink, and I think he could've been a little more aggressive there in pressing the matter vs Ngumbo.

This is all playing out according to the script. Ngumbo burned a lot of energy early for his success, and he's running low just as Fonfara heats up (as he usually does in the mid rounds).

This won't last the distance unless Fonfara's completely lost his finishing instinct.

i agree, he could of really put the work in that round, and have ngumbu completely ruined in the next round, he certianly isnt a sergey kovalev in finishing abilities.

  6. I hope this isn’t it. Looks like Fonfara’s got the timing of Ngumbu’s awkward movements down now. Might just grind him down from here.

    Round 6

Fonfara is scoring the left jab, straight and accurate from outside as Ngumbu stomps in loading up big wide left hooks. Ngumbu's head is snapped back by the jab. Fonfara backs up and shakes out a few jabs into Ngumbu's face, avoiding his hooks by swaying back and moving his feet.

    10-9 Fonfara

    58-55 Fonfara

  8. Now Doudou doing some work in round 7.

    Round 7

Fonfara is jabbing and clinching, draping himself over Ngumbu. Big hooking combos up top by Ngumbu. Fonfara tosses his 1-2 limply into the air over Ngumbu's head. Big hooks and overhand rights crouching in by Ngumbu, pressuring and shouldering his way into Fonfara. Double jab and line drive right by Ngumbu sailing in.

    10-9 Ngumbu

    67-65 Fonfara

Certainly not. He's kind of like Andy Lee meets JCC Jr. A big, lanky attrition fighter whose grown into being able to take a punch and is there to be hit. The sum of Fonfara's parts don't really make sense as far as fitting convenient archetypes- he's like a boxing platypus.

Ironic you mentioned Kovalev, I was just thinking that Kovalev and Beterbiev would be about the worst 175 pounders imaginable for Fonfara's style.
