Not a tuneup, but as a stay busy money maker. One last million dollar payday before his real cashout. Just padding his account before his demise.

Nothing wrong with this fight IMO. Or any of Potvetkins opponents tbf.....

    First......he's not a champion. Period.

Second.....Wawzryk was a top 30 HW.....not a bad fight for a guy generally considered #4-#5 in the rankings.

His resume should only be measured as a typical contenders resume would be.

Wawzryk....... Very decent HW...would be a solid journeyman, on the level of a Monte Barrett if he'd get more active.
Rahman.........shot to peices, but was forced by the WBA, kindof an eliminator sotosay
Huck...... consider the top dog at CW by many, solid top 10 HW, great fight
Boswell......A top 20 HW, very similar to the current Thompson in terms of being able to contribute to the division.
Chagaev....was a TRUE WBA Champion when he beat Valuev. Wlad beat him but Haye did NOT. Very good fight for a shot at Wlad. Shoulda been an eliminator rather than for some fake title.

Now, that was after his second no show for a fight vs Wlad. Prior to the second no show, Potvetkin had 6 fights in 2 yrs very very solid journeyman.

And we all watched him end Byrds career and stop rising star Eddie Chambers in his tracks.

Not a bad resume for a contender IMO.

I thought it was ridilicous when Sonny Boy Jaro got his shot against Wonjongkam . Jaro had 0 wins against solid fighter after fighting 10 years as a pro.

    But BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM :nut

Wonjongkam was past his prime but I didn't see that happening. It was just a year before when Wonjongkam beat Sosa pretty handily..

This thread fails, because Wawrzyk wasn't a title challenger. Povetkin's title is a paper title.

Harrison is far better. Ask Claus Bertino:yep
    Stopped by Harrison's 1st punch at 0:30 1st rd.
Was never hurt and lost by decision to Wawrzyk.

    1) Barret is light years ahead of Wawzryk as a boxer.
    2) I don't think that Huck is top-10 HW, as he lost to 42 y.o. Arslan in his division. Anyway, I had Huck winning that fight.
    3) Thompson is FAR better boxer than Boswell, it isnt even close
    4) Byrd was beyond shot and was destroyed by a light heavyweight jorneyman in his next fight.

Chagaev and Chambers are two top wins for Povetkin.

Not comparing Wawrzyk to Barrett or Thompson to Boz in terms of styles or skills, but merely in terms of where they stand in the division.

Monte Barrett was a solid Blevel fighter, likely still is, but while he could always beat those top journeyman and stall contenders, he never could quite win consistently enough among his peers, ie other contender and or titlists.

Same goes for Thompson really......he can beat guys like Price, but put him in with a Pulev and it's curtains. Boz would have no problem finding a way to beat a guy like Price, and like Barrett, would have likely been the end to Price's hype. But Boz, like Thompson, just couldnt quite hold it against a solid contender in Potvetkin.

Prime Boz vs prime Tiger.....it's a pickem. Same goes for Barrett and Wawzryk:thumbsup

Prime Barrett KO's any version Wawrzyk, easily. Barrett has better speed, chin and punching power. Their resumes aren't comparable. Barrett has many quality wins, while Wawrzyk had never beaten top-50 fighter.
