He was very.very good in his day. He's one of those where the anti-hype movement has surpassed the hype and now he's actually underappreciated in my opinion. Late 90s and early 2000s he was terrific. I'm sure you remember Greece? We have him to thank for even making the WC in 2002.

TBH, the only thing I remember about Beckham.. yeah his goals and that ridiculous banana free kick. :rofl

I always loved watching him because of that.

...but we also had him to thank for getting us knocked out of the previous one.

However I've always rejected the notion that if he didn't score that free kick we never would've made it. We would've gone into a play off and played Estonia like Germany did. Easy work.

I don't think he ever performed for us in a major tournament, and I think his relationship with Sven was a complete liability in 2006.

Anyway, my main basis for saying he's the most overrated player of a generation is i've asked a few people who have never watched and know little about football who they believe is the best player of the lat 20 years. They say Beckham, which really says it all.

Not a bad way for a 21-year old to announce himself to the world. :good

lmfao hypejobs? ferdinad is one of the best defenders of all time. owen is a bigger hypejob than Beckham, dude completely tanked after he went to madrid, beckham is far better than you actually make him out to be. his popularity might have been overrated but he's one of the most gifted corner/free kicker, and playmaker england has had. He's easy to hate but the guy was truly great in his prime.

Oh well if he's going to be held to the standard of being the best player of his generation then he'll always come up short. But he was excellent in his day. The last Englishman to win UEFA club player of the year I believe.

And if we'd performed in the pens then we would have won despite his sending off in '98. And the sending off overshadows what had otherwise been a very good tournament from him. But there's no living down that headline.... "10 Brave Lions, 1 Stupid Boy"... It'll never be forgotten.

    Owen's a legend. His hamstrings weren't.

England hasn't had a striker show up at the big events against the big teams like Michael since Lineker.

legend in being one of the biggest disappointments of all time. he should have stayed in liverpool. **** i do miss the premier league from back in the early 2000's to like 08. Was originally an aresneal fan, Henry and ljungberg were gods, and van persie and walcott were still babies, hopped to chelsea once Henry left lol. Followed it briefly again when Kagawa went to Man u, but you damn brits fked up and played him out of position and ruined part of his prime.

One of the best defenders of all time

Owen was only at Real for a season and still score about 15 goals from the bench. He tanked when he went to Newcastle and never recovered from the injury he got on New Years Eve.

Beckham didn't win anything at Real until his final season when he spent more time on the bench. Plus if you ever looked at Beckham stats on corners and freekicks it wasn't really as impressive as it was made out to be. He was around the 5th or 6th best of everyone in the league when he was in the Premiership almost every season- it's just that everyone of his that came off got massive raved about.

Dejan Stankovic at Inter Milan/ Yugosalvia had something like twice the success rate at corners and free kicks than Beckham but nobody ever really talked about him.

I only cheer for Team USA (World Cup) and Petr Cech. Well Beckham too years ago :nod.

    Cech is amazing.

Disappointment because a rash of injuries robbed him of his ELITE pace by the time he was 25.... Torn ACL at 26 and he was never remotely the same again...

He scored 2 world cup goals at age 18, one of them against Argentina.
He scored a hatrick against Germany in World Cup Qualifying.
He scored 2 world cup goals at 22, one in the knockout stage against Denmark and another in the knockout stage against Brazil.
He scored a goal in the Euros against Portugal.

Anyone who thinks Owen was a hype-job DKSAF...

Dude ferdinand was an absolute beast. Admittedly my soccer knowledge really doesn't extend past the 90's to like 08, but are you saying he wasn't one of the best in that time? Ferdinand > that bum Gary Neville, and Terry who's actually good.

I don't know about stats, but beckham was pretty damn good in the premier league, overrated maybe, but Owen was absolute trash in real madrid, legit ****ing trash.
