I can't possibly agree with all of those who say the stoppage was the right thing to do. Andy Lee was still fighting back and hadn't even visited the canvas at that point. Horrible stoppage. Having said that, Vera deserves all the credit in the world even though I'd expect a Lee victory in a return bout.
definitely a premature stoppage imo, this ref deserves to be called a fool. Lee showed he could take a good shot (or ten) and was clearly ahead on points and throwing punches. :huh Ok he had recieved a lot of punishment, but Vera was gassing out and Lee would have made it to the end of the round. Dissapointing refereeing. Having said that Lee didn't look strong defensively and i was surprised at his lack of punching power also
Manny should keep Lee away from Vera, or anyone else who has a heartbeat, for a least 18 months. The kid is bloody awful; big hype and little ability. McKart, Ornelas, Marquez, and other fighters at that level would beat Andy Lee right now. Boo
Can't agree with this. Andy Lee was outboxing Vera fairly handily up until when he got leathered by that huge right on the ropes. Although over-hyped, the kid has plenty of ability with his fists I just hope for his sake he has bounce back ability also.
I have to agre with this.Lee is much better than he showed against Vera but there were so many flaws it will take another 10-15 fights against Vera level compeition and better to sort out these defficiencies. If the remtch takes place - Lee KO4
I watched the fight twice. Lee started eating right hands in the 2nd round, and from then on Vera landed harder and more often with each passing round. In round 3 two things happened; Andy got cut, and Vera realized Andy couldn't knock him out. That's when Vera picked up the pace and Kept Lee on his back foot for the rest of the fight. From the 4th round Vera started connecting the double jab, and the only way Lee stopped a right hand was with his face! At one point Vera dropped his hands and just walked up and smacked Lee with a right for Christ's Sake!! Lee is only 23 years old, so he may be able to learn and improve, but this was Brian Vera who walked through him. It's not like he lost a close decision to Eastman or Campus. Andy was beat up, bloody, and out of gas. Vera looked like he may be about to punch him self out in the 6th, but in the 7th he was still unmarked and coming on strong. Lee is about as raw and green as they come. Right now if he challenged Ornelas for the NABF title, Enrique would hand him his ass in 5 rounds. Boo
The thing is you never know in boxing, you can't say for certain at all that Vera was gonna win. Look at the Casamayor-Katsidis fight, if the ref had called off the fight when Katsidis knocked Casamayor out of the ring then Casamayor would have been deprived of a knockout vicotry and his championship belt...that stoppage in the Vera fight was one of the worse I have ever seen! BTW, Golota is a big SOB too! Nice guy though, a little shy at first.
Not that interested in a rematch really. Vera proved he was the better man and Andy Lee showed he has a TON of work to do.
I was disagreeing with you when you said Andy Lee is bloody awful. He isn't. The guy has a lot going for him, he just couldn't keep up with Vera's pace and was leathered on at least two occasions by right hands. He'll be back.
Everybody is awful except Pavlik.According to Boo, Pavlik is superhuman and immortal. Boo is becomming a bit boring
I agree with ya. Andy should take the loss and move on. Like I keep saying; I watched that fight twice, and the whole time I kept thinking that if Vera could calm down, throw straght punches, and polish up his finishing skills, he would take Lee out a lot sooner. Lee on the other hand was just not impressive at all. I had seen him twice before, and watched some You Tube stuff. I was really hoping he would turn out to be the real thing. Mainly beause I am a huge Pavlik fan, and would like to see Kelly dominate some good fighters at 160. However, Andy Lee is 3 to 4 years and 10 or 12 solid wins away from serious title contention at best. Boo
Again, I disagree. Andy Lee looked like the more skilled and talented pro in there. It was Lee landing the more impressive shots; uppercuts, one-twos, whilst Vera was trying to land that big punch all the time, and when missing, looked rather sluggish. I think it's a credit to Vera that he wasn't knocked out prior to the 7th round considering some of the shots he was hit with, and he deserved the victory. However, I feel you're being unfair to Lee. He hasn't so far lived up to the hype, but he showed ability even in defeat, and I expect him to come back to gain redemption over Vera. He should fight Vera again to show all his critics that it was a one-off performance. I'm rooting for him. :good
And we all know you are one of the guys who had Lee slated to beat Pavlik soon, but your boy got beat up bad by a contender wash-out who lost to Jaidon Codrington. And by the way, I was a serious boxing fan, and an Amatuer boxer BEFORE YOU WERE BORN. Get back in your mother's basement. Boo
Lee was obviously the more skilled and would have KOed Vera if he threw the right hook (his signature punch).Lee has never shown much power with the left hand yet he still shook Vera twice. His defense sucked and he had no inside game at all but these are things he can work on. This defeat will either make him or break him and at 23 years of age he can still get to the top. After Pavlik moves to 168 in about 18 months the division will be wide open
