It wasn't that bad of a stoppage. Could it have gone longer? Yes. But really Lee was having a terrible night, he just couldn't shake the guy and fought a poor tactical fight. The ref knows he is a talented guy and can come again, he does not need to be starched which was just inevitable.
The Vera fight showed Lee's weakness-he can't fight on the inside. He has great skills and is a very good boxer on the outside but once Vera got on the inside after a few rounds he was lost, his clinching was non-existent too and he was getting battered on the inside. He was outboxing Vera with ease for the the first 3 or so rounds and then started getting sloppy and was eventually made to pay for it. The fight could have gone on longer but I think it was a good stoppage from the ref. He'd rather get stopped early now and learn from his mistakes and become a better fighter than be allowed to continue fighting and cop a beating that could affect him for the rest of his career. I'm guessing Steward will turn him into a Wlad-type fighter now who controls things from the outside and then as soon as the other guy gets inside get him in a clinch and wait for the ref to split them. Hopefully he'll be a bit more exciting than Wlad though! After Pavlik and AA move up I can see him been 'the man' at MW.
Amen! I had been bitching and complaining myself for awhile, but after that fight (I am a Lee fan) I was outright disgusted with boxing for a bit (it didn't last long but I swore it would!). The guys come to fight! To stop a fight when the fighter is winning the fight, never been down, and was returning punch for punch is an outrage. Aside from that I think Andy Lee could be one of the greats, but as we all know only time will time.
Yes is was and I don't know that Lee could have ever put down Vera for the count. Vera has a freakishly chin (see: James Kirkland vs. Brian Vera) maybe one of the best ever at MW though he has no talent to go any farther IMO. Kirland connected with so many powershots on Vera reporters ringside were screaming to stop the fight. Even thought Vera did not win a round and was knocked down 3 times he complained about the stoppage! I had the look up the numbers: Blows: Kirkland 283/532 53%, Vera 64/470 14%.
He's supposed to be headlining a card in New york around Paddy's day and they are hoping to squeeze in a fight in Ireland mid January
vera wont give him a rematch! Lee wanted one straight away alas he fought willie gibbs instead [yt]byiOUEpc4WI[/yt]
You're exactly right here. Vera's camp wanted a bigger money fight so they denied Lee's request for a rematch. Well, Vera wound up not even fighting until Kirkland, where Vera expectedly received a terrible beating. I hope they got paid enough to make it worth their while, otherwise it made zero sense not to take the Lee rematch.
The brother is down in limerick so id defo head along to that he was out with the gael force last thursday to see sutherland fight
Yeah it was........I was at teh edge of my seat during it. I called it in the 3rd round and my boy laughed in my face.
And Vera was doing what? Walking forward hitting a bloody and battered Lee damn near at will. There is no debate about who has the brightest future. Clearly Andy Lee has a good shot at a great career, but on the evening of March 21, 2008 he got his ass handed to him. Deal with it.
I think he might turn out to be a real solid contender in the future, but the Vera loss opened my eyes to see that this kid will never be anything special. If he rededicates himself he might be a good fighter for years to come but he'll never be an elite fighter in my eyes.
