If that was someone like Ben Davison in Paint Dry Parker's corner last night, they would be slaughtered. Andy Lee, however, seems to get a pass on a lot of things, including on some of his outrageous punditry and commentary work. He did not have a Scooby Doo what to say from about round five onward. He was stood there nervously and uncertain; not saying much. Surely that's the last thing his boxer would want to see. I am not sure how good he is in the gym, but he must have sanctioned this awfully stupid weight gain. Parker was at least 15 pounds heavier than he should have been and it restricted his output. A lot of people here prior to the fight were citing Andy Lee as an important resource to the "new and improved" Parker. What happened?
I think people just underestimate how much of a juggernaut joyce is. They all probably think, gain some weight, land big shots, stop the juggernaut, slow him down. But that doesn't happen, the juggernaut is made out of Irish granite. You have to out skill it
to be fair we all saw Parker actually did regress over the years 2016-2021 with Kevin Barry to a point where he struggled with Junior Fa & we saw him improved in 2021 over the two Chisora fight so the change did help but yes this does not prove Andy Lee is good only show how bad Parker became with Kevin Barry there are far more good boxers in world than good trainers most overrated job in boxing is the coaches of the professionals. only a very small number actually deliver or earn their reputation. most just piggy back on the ability of the boxer.
It was a very weird “game plan” (if it was a plan at all, it looked like they had no plan/training before hand). It’s obvious what JJ is going to go so why not prepare for that??!
Lee did seem to show some improvements in Parker in the Chisora fight. But for some reason they tried a similar tactic against Joyce as they did for Chisora which perhaps highlights the limits of Andy Lee as a trainer. Lee was clearly the wrong guy to prepare Parker for a fighter like Joyce.
cant teach brains. Parker hasn't imo the sporting intelligence. And I think he might be having trouble losing the weight so maybe they just conceded that he's going to be heavier. Tua had the same problem. Dunno. Or they wanted a big heavy parker to throw his own weight around, but that didn't seem to be effective. The Chisora fight was all about the uppercut, really, wasnt it. He still looked horrendous whilst getting backed up.
Parker was better last night than some of his Barry fights. At least he came to fight. I really don't think tactics could have helped Parker here, maybe by coming light and boxing defense he could last 12 rounds, but what's the point? Better to come to fight, and make a war of it as long as he could. Barry era Parker would not have landed much more than a few jabs.
I think a better strategy would have been to beat Joyce to the punch like we saw, then move off and repeat. He was too slow on the way out and was caught a lot of the times after he landed his own shots. Parker did try to steal rounds at the end of some rounds, had he been more agile, faster and set a faster pace he might have been able to pick up more rounds than he did, especially in the first half of the fight. Would he of won with that strategy, probably not as Joyce probably would have still eventually worn him down but I think Parker would have done better than we saw last night where he basically tried to over power a bigger, stronger man who has a chin denser than Captain America's shield.
No matter the tactics he would not have won. Joyce is just much better. But his best strategy would have been to pick his punches and move out of range the entire bout. Nick it on points. You need stamina for that, and he has next to none. He would be better off losing 1.5 stones.
Coming in so heavy was always going to be a disaster. The worst plan for a big heavyweight fight since Dave Coldwell made David Price but on a huge amount of weight knowing he has stamina issues against Christian Hammer.
This. When in shape Parker’s best assets are his mobility and handspeed, but at over 250 lbs he lacked both. Parker was moving like he had cement blocks around his feet.
That would be the way to beat Joyce, problem is few if any man over 200 pounds can do that for 12 rounds when a 6' 6" behemoth is on you azz like white on rice, pounding away.
