Andy Ruiz has wasted his career by being inactive. He is very fast, only 6 feet 2 inches tall, but good chin as well, he needs to get back into the fight and fight often or he will end up like so many other boxers who have ended up in the alley...................he has the talent, but will he train?
Because you know there were those pictures of him looking really lean last year? He looked about 215 lbs at a guess. Well in his last fight in March he weighed in at 260, thats 5lbs more than he weighed for the Parker fight. I also saw footage of it and he looked sloppy and over weight again.
Crazy isn't it, he was lighter when inactive, but when it's time to fight again, he blows up in weight. When you go into a training camp and gain that much weight you are doing something wrong. At least Arreola lost weight in training camps. What is Ruiz Jr's training camp like, is it 12 rounds of 3 mins of eating as much as you can, it seems so. I think it's safe to say we'll never see Ruiz Jr fulfill his potential, we can forget about him ever being a top contender.
I think his issues are not technical deficiencies but more a stylistic problem. He started off being a puncher, standing still in front of guys, beating them to the punch and knocking them out. Against low level guys his speed and power overwhelmed them. But as he's stepped up his lack of genuine power has forced him to box and move more as he can't hurt guys like he did at the lower level and is forced to move. Because he's had to change his style and become more of a mover he's going through a difficult period off having to adjust and create a new style that works for him. His main issue is being able to mount any kind of consistent offence. He was previously able to stand the just let his hands go but now he's almost constantly on the back foot and as he hasn't learned to counter punch he's left when very few opportunities to throw and when he does he has to set his feet to punch and when he does that he's vulnerable. So his inability to deliver a consistent offensive output sees him in a lot of close fights. But if he can solve that issue and add counter punching to his arsenal I think he will suddenly become a much better overall fighter. The talent is there but the skill set at the moment is lacking.
Ruiz has talent. Very fast hands. But he needs to show more ambition and motivation. Fighting kingpin will get him nowhere.
Has Kevin Johnson won a round in the last 5 years? SMFH. He should get 119-109 tattooed on his chest because that’s what his fights all end up. Andy is a monument to carbo-loading. He ain’t fat; just a whole lotta man.
It's true. Kingpin would have only lost to Vitali and Joshua if all of his fights were one-rounders. He usually has a decent opening round, showing a solid jab, only to go in full defensive mode afterwards and barely throwing punches to lose 11 rounds in a row...
