he's the one guy you have that i'm pretty big on.

if people are judging this based on his size, they're in for a rude awakening. his Combo's for a Heavyweight are pretty impressive.

don't know anything about Hanks though. is he any good? does he have any power? what's his skill set like?

and lastly, who've you got? :thumbsup

:yikes Ruiz looks nothing like Arreola. Ruiz has genuine talent for a start.

just need to see how good his heart and chin are like next. i've got a hunch that it'll be solid.

Ruiz looks like he's actually going somewhere. he has serious promise if he knuckles down.

don't know anything about Hanks so can't comment there. but Scott isn't going anywhere, that's for sure. even if he beats Del Boy.

...the one guy I have? I'm not Mexican.

Hanks is OK...very relaxed and confident guy who brings an intimidation factor with his physique. He plods around in circles with a shoulder roll throwing a nice jab to lull opponents, usually starting pretty slowly until he lathers up a rhythm. He does have lights out power but his power punches have a woeful accuracy rate. Really his strong suit is the jab and he to date hasn't faced anyone else with a strong jab, so it remains to be seen if he can win a "battle of the jabs" even though it looks nice against cans...

I pick Ruiz based on having been far more consistently impressed with him than my few looks @ Hanks.

ruiz has been in with a lot of good heavies and has held his own for years sparring any and everyone in l.a. he's not new to boxing. joe hanks is one of the all american heavyweights who used to be a college athlete turned boxer. you'll see the difference in skill and ability in this fight. andy ruiz all day.

Hanks looks the part and Ruiz doesn't, but Ruiz is the real deal (and, I suspect, Hanks isn't)

hanks does have decent defense and potential...but he's never been in with anyone like andy. he's definitely getting tested.

as for andy's physique...first time i saw the dude i thought 'man this dude is about to get hurt.' he surprised me with his speed, workrate and stamina. some guys can carry weight and still be good. he's one of them.

i've heard he's down to like 240. he's not one of those guys that will ever look muscular, but he's strong.

Good matchup, looking forward to it.

The winner deserves a high ranking.

Ruiz looks nothing like an athlete but he surelly can perform. Would he benefit from toning up and losing weight? His large body do fit his style though.

I remember he said he wanted to stay somewhere 240-245lbs for the big fights.

    "If it ain't broke..."

I'm actually not on the Ruiz hopping a treadmill bandwagon. Having to adjust to a brand new morphology and relearn the ropes could prove very detrimental to him, and strange as it seems he may even increase his chance of getting hurt by dropping too much weight (especially if using shortcut methods in a short time span) and be "drained" in spite of looking fit, or even still corpulent.

What he does works, and he is comfortably settled into a range having come in more or less consistently in the 250's the last couple of years. Any major disruption in a boxer's routine can have ill effects. If the extra flab isn't proving detrimental in any real way (besides aesthetic) - he should keep it.

No more blowing up to double-welterweight, though. :nono

note: this is in stark contrast to my views on Cristobal Arreola, whose fatness is directly linked with his laziness in the gym and wanton sloth & gluttony between camps. Unlike Ruiz he never refined a set of skills to fall back on to excel in spite of his chunkiness. Any success that came to him was the result of imposing his size and strength - not fine-tuned boxing skills or sound tactical game planning. There is a double standard. Ruiz is dedicated - to the sweet science, if not general fitness - and thus he gets a pass that Arreola (who thumbs his nose at the craft as much as conventional body image) doesn't. Arreola lets his weight drag him down, and he would be much improved if he lost a great deal of it - which he won't do, so **** him. Ruiz doesn't seem to let the weight diminish his abilities, so he can do as he likes.
