So after 18 months out Arreola was supposed to be his comeback fight, but he sucked so much he needed to take another 14 months off for a second comeback fight. And after he defeats Spong he'll take another 8 months and need a tune-up, after which in late 2023 he'll be looking for a meaningful fight.
I was on the fat man bandwagon when he was on the rise. But Spong? Come on man...you were the heavyweight champ...and you pick Spong. Bandwagon is on fire.
That might be true...but at this stage of his career, Ruiz shouldn't be fighting anyone at all outside the top 15 or so even for a tune up. Spong is nowhere near the top 15
Spong is fine if he Ruiz was active fighting 4-5 times a year and this was going to be a keep busy fight. As it is this is probably his only fight for the year, maybe he'll get another in December. This inactivity is maddening
Ruiz was never diligent with training or diet when he was a relatively impoverished and significantly younger fringe contender so what are two mega money set for life fights plus 3 world title belts going to do to his motivation at 32+? He achieved a level of success in one night that he knows he can never reach again, absolutely everyone knows his strengths and weaknesses now. He will avoid anyone with footspeed, unless it's for big money or a title. He isn't remotely bothered anymore and whenever he does come back the performance is likely to be lacklustre, further reducing his motivation and keeping him inactive for long periods.
