Monday Night - April 15, 1974 (San Juan, Puerto Rico) #1 WBA-ranked Welterweight Angel 'Cholo' Espada returns to the ring in San Juan, after a 5-month break. The 26 year-old Puerto Rican, 28-6-4 (16 KO's) will be taking on Baltimore, Maryland Light-Middleweight - Alvin Anderson 18-4-2 (10 KO's) in a bout set for 151 lbs. 'Cholo' Espada is hoping for a Title Shot versus World Champion Jose Napoles, for sometime in late-1974. Alvin Anderson, a 27 year-old, 5' 11" boxer-puncher, is ranked as the #11 WBA Light-Middleweight, and is looking to 'upset' the Top-ranked Welterweight. The 'boxer-puncher' Anderson came to San Juan back in November 1973, and 'upset' (KO 4) the #9 WBA Welterweight - 'undefeated' Puerto Rican prospect Fausto 'Ceja' Rodriguez. The Fight At the opening bell, Alvin Anderson tries to take the fight to Angel Esapda, by attacking with right hand bombs. 'Cholo' blocks most of them, but a few do get through to back Espada up. Anderson tries to measure Espada with his long left hand, and shoots the right hand down the middle. In Round 2, 'Cholo' Espada is waiting to counter-punch, as Anderson is throwing punches. Then suddenly, as Anderson misses a long right, Espada drops in a beautiful left-hook that floors Alvin Anderson. Anderson staggers up at the 6-Count, but is met with a 'Cholo' Espada barrage that floors him for the '10-count' at 1:26 of Round 2. Alvin Anderson This content is protected

According to Yamil Chade, Napoles is planning to defend his World Championship in August 1974 versus Hedgemon Lewis, the #1 WBC / #2 WBA ranked Challenger. 'Cholo' Espada said, he might not want to wait until late-1974 or early-1975 for a chance at the Welterweight Championship. Espada stated, that he could get a quicker shot at the World Light-Middleweight Championship, against Japan's Koichi Wajima, providing he travelled to Tokyo. 'Cholo' Espada scored an impressive win (KO 2) over the #11 WBA Light-Middleweight Alvin Anderson in his last bout 2-weeks ago, and may campaign at the 154 lb. Divsion for the remainder of 1974.
Friday Night - May 10, 1974 (Roberto Clemente Stadium - San Juan, Puerto Rico) Angel 'Cholo' Espada....29-6-4 (17 KO's).........#1 WBA Welterweight vs. David Oropeza............46-5-1 (21 KO's).........#13 WBA Welterweight Angel 'Cholo' Espada, the 26 year-old Puerto Rican Welterweight, and #1 WBA Challenger takes on David Oropeza of Phoenix, Arizona in a Welterweight bout. Oropeza, a 24 year-old 5' 11" boxer-puncher, posts a 46-5-1 (21 KO's) record, and is regarded as a young tough fighter, who is willing to trade punches with his opponents. David had a '17' bout unbeaten streak broken on January 26, 1974 - when he was stopped (L KO 3) by Armando Muniz in Arizona. Since the KO loss, David has come back with a (KO 5) over Manny Leal on April 21, 1974. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Fight 'Cholo' Espada opens up by boxing from long range, utilizing his left jab, and constant side-to-side movement. David Oropeza presses, and is looking to land his hard right hand. In Round 2, Oropeza lands a good right hand early, that backs Espada up. Oropeza tries to follow up, but is tied up by 'Cholo'. Both fighters box at long range, using their left hand jabs. Round 3, Oropeza continues to be the aggressor, and Espada is the boxer-mover. Though Oropeza is moving forward, 'Cholo' is the one scoring with the punches, left jabs and sharp right hand leads. Round 4, Oropeza again is chugging forward, and 'Cholo' continues to jab and move. By mid-round, Oropeza is lunging with his punches, in an attempt to land. Espada still jabs and moves, but quickly moves in to land a left hook and right hand. Oropeza is briefly stunned, and tries to grab Espada. 'Cholo' spins free, and fires off a '5-punch' flurry capped off by a big right hand to the jaw. David Oropeza goes down, and is counted out a 2:01 of Round 4. Angel 'Cholo' Espada improves to 30-6-4 (18 KO's) David Oropeza falls to 46-6-1. Monday Night -July 29, 1974 (San Juan, Puerto Rico) WBA Welterweight Elimination Bout Angel 'Cholo' Espada............30-6-4 (18 KO's)....#1 WBA vs. Armando 'El Hombre' Muniz....34-7-1 (24 KO's)....#5 WBA The 26 year-old Puerto Rican, 5' 9 1/2" Angel 'Cholo' Espada will be taking on the dangerous 26 year-old 5' 6" 'Bull Dog' Armando 'El Hombre' Muniz, in a 10-Round Welterweight bout. 'Cholo' Espada has won '10-straight' bouts, and is the #1 WBA-ranked Welterweight. The winner of this 'Elimination-bout' will be the mandatory WBA Challenger for the Welterweight Championship. According to the WBA, the winner of the Jose Napoles vs. Hedgemon Lewis Championship bout in August 1974, will have 6-Months to 'sign' to fight the winner of this Welterweight bout. The Fight 'Cholo' Espada using his quickness, continually out-scores the slower and shorter Armando Muniz, by landing sharp left jabs, and quick straight right hands. By Round 4, 'Cholo' is pitching a 'shut-out', as Muniz cannot get close enough to land his hard left hooks. In Round 5, 'Cholo' switches his attack, to a 'flat-footed stance' and its down on his punches, landing harder shots on the stationary Muniz. 'Cholo' wins Rounds 5, 6 and 7 'big', and is leading by 7-0 in rounds on the Scorecard. In Round 8, 'almost disaster'. As 'Cholo' stays staionary, Armando Muniz waits, to time one of Espada's right hands, and does by countering with a 'monster left hook', hurting 'Cholo' badly. Espada staggers as Muniz moves in and starts wailing away. In desperation, Espada grabs Muniz by the waist, and holds on for dear life. 'Cholo' does everything possible by grabbing and holding Muniz throughout the round, and barely escapes, making it to the bell. Amazingly, 'Cholo' recovered between Rounds, and came out for Round 9 refreshed. This time, Espada went back to boxing and moving, while Armando Muniz pressed and looked for the 'big left hook'. Espada won Round 9. In the Final Round, both fighters went toe-to-toe, each slugging away with hard hooks. 'Cholo' landed more punches, but Muniz landed the harder left hooks. Scorecards; ( 97-92 / 97-93 / 97-92 ) Angel Espada by Unanimous Decision. Attendance; 6600 Fight Purses; Angel Espada.......$6500 Armando Muniz.....$5500 (Plus Expenses)
Saint Pat After Angel 'Cholo' Espada defeated Aramando Muniz on July 29, 1974 - he was positioned as the 'next' mandatory WBA challenger. Jose Napoles defeated (TKO 9) {#1 WBC/#2 WBA} Hedgemon Lewis on August 3, 1974 in Mexico City. Jose Napoles was supposed to fight Angel 'Cholo' Espada, for a tentative date set on December 14, 1974 for Mexico City. But, 'Angel 'Cholo' Espada took a 'tune-up' bout on November 13, 1974 in San Juan (one-month before the scheduled Welterweight Chamionbship bout). 'Cholo' won by 'knockout (KO 2) over Hector Rivas 8-3-1 (2 KO's), but injured his left hand (fractured bone) in the process. Unfortunately, Espada could not go through with his quest for the World Welterweight Championship, as the injury would put him out of action for 3-months. In the meantime, Argentinian - Horacio Agustin Saldano filled in as replacement Challenger for Jose Napoles, who retained his title by a 'knockout' (KO 3) on December 14, 1974.
Out of the ring since November 15, 1974 (due to an injured wrist) - 4-months later, the 27 year-old Angel 'Cholo' Espada 32-6-4 (19 KO's) returns on Saturday - March 15, 1975 versus Luis Acosta (Venezuela) in a bout in Caracas. Not too much is known about Luis Acosta, other than that the 21 year-old - 5' 10 1/2" Welterweight is undefeated at 21-0-0 (9 KO's), and is the #6 WBA Welterweight. Acosta is supposed to have a long left jab with 'snap', and a quick straight right hand. Angel 'Cholo' Espada (#1 WBA) vs. Luis Acosta (#6 WBA) will be part of the 'El Poliedro' Caracas, Venezuela 'Big Fight Showdown' with, A) Alexis Arguello vs Leonel Hernadez...............(WBA Featherweight Championship) B) Antonio Cervantes vs Ray Chavez Guerrero....(Non-Title Light-Welterweight fight) C) Esteban De Jesus vs. Jesse Lara..................(Light-Welterweight bout) 20,000 + boxing fans turn out at the El Poliedro -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the meantime, World Welterweight Champion decides to defend his Championship versus Armando Muniz on March 30, 1975 - in Mexico. Though Armando Muniz is ranked below Angel Espada, Armando had defeated #1 WBC/#2 WBA Hedgemon Lewis by decision (W Dec 10) in December 1974, and Muniz is a better 'money fight' than Angel Espada. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In a 'shocker' Luis Acosta (Venezuela) upsets (W Dec 10) #1 WBA Angel Espada. Luis Acosta uses his longer reach to out-jab Angel Espada over the majority of the bout. 'Cholo' has a difficult time landing any of his patented sharp jabs or counter righ-hands. The 21 year-old Acosta, rocks 'Cholo' in Rounds 2 and 5 with straight right-hands, and keeps Espada at bay with constant long jabs in Rounds 6 and 7. 'Cholo' puts on a spurt in Rounds 8, 9 and 10, but he just falls short, as Luis Acosta is awarded a 'hometown' Unanimous 10-Round Decision. Scorecards ( 46-45 / 46 -45 / 47-46 ) - By a 5-Point Must Scoring. The loss drops Angel 'Cholo' Espada to 32-7-4, and he gets bumped down to the #3 WBA Welterweight Luis Acosta improves to 22-0-0, and moves up to the #2 WBA Welterweight. Canadian - Clyde Gray 47-3-1 is now the #1 WBA Welterweight.
March 1975 Welterweight Scene. World Welterweight Champion (WBA & WBC) Jose 'Mantequiila' Napoles defends his Championship versus (#4 WBA / #2 WBC) Armando 'El Hombre' Muniz on March 30, 1975. The WBA sanctions the bout, but also has stated that the winner must 'sign a contract' within 30-days after the bout, to defend his title versus any of the Top '3' WBA Challengers #1 Clyde Gray, #2 Luis Acosta or #3 Angel Espada. The 28 year-old Canadian, Clyde Gray, is the Canadian and also the British-Commonwealth Welterweight Champion. Clyde Gray had fought Jose Napoles for the Welterweight Champinonship back on September 22, 1973 - while losing a a hard-fought 15-Round Decision. To stay busy will waiting for his 2nd Shot at the Welterweight Championship, Gray fights '3' 'B-Level' Welterweights. * March 3, 1975....... KO 5...Marc Gervais * April 9, 1975......... KO 3....Bobby Williams * April 26, 1975....... KO 3.....Sammy Rookard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the other hand, while it appears that Jose Napoles will not 'sign' fight one of the Top '3' WBA Welterweights, the WBA has #2 Luis Acosta and #3 Angel Espada fight a 'rematch' in a WBA Elimination bout. This time the bout (April 12, 1975) will take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico with '3' appointed neutral WBA officials. In the meantime, Jose Napoles 'tainted' victory (W Tech Dec 12) over Armando Muniz on March 30, 1975 has caused quite a 'controversy', and it looks like they will fight a rematch, as soon as Napoles recovers from the bad cuts over his eyes.
Saturday Night - April 12, 1975 (San Juan, Puerto Rico) WBA Welterweight Elimination Bout Whats On the Line; An opportunity fo fight for the 'vacant' WBA Welterweight Championship. #3 WBA - Angel 'Cholo' Espada (Puerto Rico) ....32-7-4 (19 KO's)...{Age 28} vs. #2 WBA - Luis Acosta (Venezuela) ..................22-0-0 (9 KO's)....{Age 21} The 28 year-old - 5' 9 1/2" - boxer-puncher 'Cholo' Espada will get the benefit of a hometown crowd in tonights Welterweight bout. 'Cholo' will try to utlize his good footwork, solid left jab, combination punching and good overall boxing skills to win this bout. The 21 year-old - 5' 10 1/2" - boxer-slasher Luis Acota will be fighting for the first time outside of Venezuela. The young Acosta, will agin try to use his snappy long left jab, and quick accurate right hand to neutralize Espada's counters. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Fight This time, 'Cholo' is not surprised by the previous unknown Luis Acosta. Espada scores early and often with sharp hard left jabs, by staying in a low-position, not an upright-stance like in their previous bout. After 3-Rounds, 'Cholo' Espada is in control, as has won all '3' rounds. Luis Acosta gets backs into the fight in Round 4, by finding the 'mark' with his long left snap-jab and counter left hooks. Rounds 5 and 6, are fought more in a 'safety position', as neither fighter opens up, and both fighters box cautiously by throwing single punches only. Round 7, 'Cholo' Espada opens up by firing hard punches, and lands several good right hands which shake Luis Acosta. Espada stays as the aggressor throughout, while the Venezuelan is on the defensive. Round 8, Espada stays aggressive, and back Acosta up to the ropes, where he scores with solid left jabs and counter right-hands. It is all 'Cholo' Espada now. Rounds 9 and 10, are boxed from a distance as 'Cholo' Espada is smartly staying outside, protecting his points lead by jabbing and moving. Luis Acosta tries to press, but he doesn't punch hard enough or often enough to hurt 'Cholo'. Clyde Gray 'The Powerfully Built Canadian' This content is protected The Fight Angel 'Cholo' Espada took advantage of his height, reach and speed early, as he out-sped the shorter Clyde Gray, by snapping off left jabs from long range, and shooting in quick right-hand leads to the body. The 'fire-plug' Canadian was having a difficult time cloing the distance, and was limited to landing an occassional left jab and right-hand to the body. Through '5' Rounds, the scorecard was 4-0-1 for Angel 'Cholo' Espada. Cylde Gray was able to close the distance a bit in Round 6, and was able to land some hard body shots. But 'Cholo' Espada was able to get back to moving in Rounds 7 and 8, and circled and and jabbed, as well as using good side-to-side movement. In Round 9, Gray was able to have his best round of the fight, by landing several good 1-2's, and leaping in with an occassional right hand lead to the head. Rounds 10 thru 12 were fought on 'Even Terms'. With Clyde Gray as the aggressor, throwing right hand leads and left hooks. And 'Cholo' Espada by boxing, using sharp left hand jabs, short uppercuts and right-crosses. Johnny Gant (left) trading with Champion Angel Espada (right). This content is protected The Fight The slick boxing 27 year-old Champion took control of the bout in Round 2, and swept the next '6' Rounds by scoring with a variety of left jabs, combinations and hard right hands to the body. Johnny Gant was able to get through to 'Cholo' Espada in Rounds 8 and 9, with some long poking left jabs and some good hard right hands to the head, which slowed Espada down a bit. But the Champion rallied back strong in Round 10, by landing a slashing right hand which cut Johnny Gant's left eye. From there, 'Cholo' landed some good hard body punches that kept the taller Johnny Gant at bay. In Round 11, 'Cholo' kept up the pressure, and again scored with a variety of punches, keeping the Challenger on the defensive. Johnny Gant made a 'surge' in Rounds 12 and 13, by sticking his long left into 'Cholo' Espada's face, and a few hard right hands to head. Morgan, After Angel Espada defended his WBA Championship on October 11, 1975. 'Cholo' did not fight for 6-Months. His promoter Felix 'Tutu' Zabala could not come though with a promised 'big money fight'. At first, there was an attempt to get former Champion Jose Napoles to come out of his early-retirement (since losing to John H. Stracey on December 6, 1975) and fight in Puerto Rico in March or April 1975. But, Jose Napoles 'pulled-out', stating that needed more time to prepare. Mexican Welterweight Champion, #7 WBA Welterweight -Jose Baquedano looked to be a possibility, but he too was not ready. Former WBC Light-Welterweight Champion - Bruno Arcari (Italy) had no interest in fighting outside of Italy, so he too declined. As a tune-up, on Tuesday Night - April 27, 1976 - Angel Espada took on Philadelphia Welterweight - Alfonso Hayman 16-6-3 (8 KO's) in a 'non-title' bout.
Tuesday Night - April 27, 1976 (Roberto Clemente Stadium - San Juan, Puerto Rico) Unable to 'secure' a bout with the former Welterweight Champion - Jose Napoles, WBA Welterweight Champion takes on a 'non-title' bout with Philadelphia boxer-puncher Alfonso 'Fonzie' Hayman. The 27 year-old Angel 'Cholo' Espada 34-7-4 (19 KO's) will be fighting for the first time in 6 1/2 months (last bout October 11, 1974). The 25 year-old Alfonso Hayman, a 5' 11" South Philly 'banger' posts a 16-6-3 (8 KO's) record. Hayman has lost '3' straight bouts, since scoring a 'big upset' on November 26, 1974 - when he stopped (TKO 10) World-ranked Johnny Gant. Alfonso 'Fonzie' Hayman This content is protected -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Fight The Champion fights cautiously over the first '4' Rounds, as he boxes and stays away from Alfonso Hayman's 'sneaky-hard' right hands. In Round 5, 'Cholo' Espada picks up the pace, and starts landing hard right hands to body and counter left hands. In Rounds 6 and 7, Espada is backing Hayman up with sharp left hands and whipping right hooks. Hayman is having a hard time holding Espada off, as the Champiuon is too quick and too sharp. Round 8, 'Cholo' moves quickly, by scoring with his usual sharp left hands and right hands to the body. At the 1:15 Mark, Espada lands a counter right hand and left hook to the jaw which drops Alfonso Hayman. Hayman gets up at the '8-Count', but is dazed and unable to continue, as Referee Ray Valdez calls a halt to the bout. Angel 'Cholo' Espada improves to 35-7-4 (20 KO's). Promoter; Felix 'Tutu' Zabala Attendance; 6500 Fight Purses; Angel Espada........$20,000 Alfonso Hayman......$4000 Yamil Chade ('Cholo' Espada's Manager) states that he still has hopes that the 'semi-retired' Jose Napoles will return to the ring, and fight Angel Espada in Puerto Rico, in June 1976. If not, we may have to go to 'Plan B' - and head out to Southern California, to scout a few potential challengers.
Whether the story is completely true is up for debate. WBA Welterweight Champion - Angel 'Cholo' Espada and Manager - Yamil Chade head out to Los Angeles, California. Their visit, is to scout a possible 'West Coast' or 'Mexican' Challenger. On Wednesday Night - June 2, 1976 - at the Sports Arena, 'two' WBA Top 10 Welterweights will be going at it, in a 10-Round bout, and 'Cholo' Espada and Yamil Chade will there at 'ringside' to observe the 'two' young Welterweights. From California, 22 year-old - 5' 9" stylist - Andy 'The Hawk' Price 20-1-3 (6 KO's). Andy, is the WBA #7 Welterweight. He has 'fast-hands' and is a sharp combination puncher. Many on the 'west coast' boxing scene consider Andy as the 'fastest boxer' in the Welterweight division, and they feel he would give Angel Espada more than he could handle for 15-Rounds. From Mexico, 18 1/2 year-old - 5' 8" pure-banger - Jose 'Pipino' Cuevas 15-5-0 (13 KO's). Pipino, is the WBA #6 Welterweight. Pipino is a super popular fighter with the young fans in Mexico, mainly because of his wide-open homerun swinging style. Blessed with superior punching power, Pipino has pure 'one-punch knockout power'. Pipino got off to a rough start early in his career, but the 'teenager' has turned it around with '8' straight wins, '6' by knockout. This bout will be simply 'Speed versus Power'. What Angel 'Cholo' Espada and Yamil Chade will be looking for, is the easier opponent to fight. Also at Ringside, Mexican Boxing Promoter - Rafael Mendoza, who is trying to lock up Angel Espada in a '4-bout' fight deal, to face his stable of 'Jose' Welterweights in Mexico. Which inclues; * Jose 'Pipino' Cuevas * Jose Baquedano * Jose Figueroa * Jose Palacios * Jose Luis Baltazar Since it is apparent that former Welterweight Champion - Jose Napoles will not return to the ring in 1976, Yamil Chade and his fighter Angel 'Cholo' Espada will go to 'Plan B'.
