If Hearn brags about $1bn budget, what does he expect? Fighters are gonna want more to fight on his platform. That eye-catching headline he used to announce the DAZN deal is coming back to bite him on the arse. Anyone in business knows you keep the extent of your finances vague when striking a deal...

So what should he of said?

'We have a new deal with DAZN but I cant tell you the numbers involved'.

Who would of cared about that?

If DAZN got the rights to the NFL then the NFL are sure going to announce how much it is worth.

Can you name any other broadcasting deal for a combat sport which gets announced with no actual numbers?

    Bellator DAZN deal mentioned numbers.

    UFC ESPN deal mentions numbers.

    WWE fox deal mentions numbers.

You cannot announce a new tv deal without the numbers? There is no PR if you cant even reveal what the deal entails.

I see the Top Rank deal with ESPN didnt mention the monetary value which could be because it wasnt worth very much?

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/17/sports/espn-boxing.html

ESPN and Top Rank declined to discuss the terms of the deal, but the amount the network will pay over four years is estimated to be less than the cost of a single “Monday Night Football” game.

You would expect the majority of those fighters, even a lot of the not really smart ones, can figure out for themselves that he isn't in it for charity. There's overpaying fighters (Haymon style), there's massively overpaying fighters (JayZ style) and there's expecting insanity (like this).
Sure Hearn/Dazn are bound to overpay some just to have their names on their roster, but everyone with half a brain knows not to ask for these ridiculous amounts and just get the finger instead. Overasking and then hopefully getting a good amount of that after negotiating outside of public view is 10 times smarter as this nonsense.

I do believe however that some come out with demands like this because they can't get out of their current contracts and still want to look in full control towards their fanbase.

Because $1bn is BS. No one throws a billion at a start-up. He factored in all the options which will only activate should targets be hit over a period of years. If you think he's got access to $1bn (or ever will in all likelihood) you must be crazy. Eddie is like a child who's been given the biggest ever chest of toys to play with, and he's got a little giddy. To be fair though, he's good at spending other people's money ;)

True. But I guess they are using the basic principle 'if you don't ask you don't get'. Worth a roll of the dice I suppose, and Hearn still needs to grow his roster and isn't slow coming forward to alk about how big his budget is. Broner made public the kind of figures Hearn was throwing about, so I guess you pitch high and see what comes back...

That's what I mean, as he could have asked for 4 to 4½ million behind closed doors (JayZ level overpaying) and maybe getting 3 to 3½ out of it (still way too much for Danny). Asking 6 to 8 in public just makes you look like a clown instead.

Probably settle for that too. But it's like any financial negotiation you work towards the figure you want rather than start there. Ask for $6m, get $4m. But ask for $4m, you might 'only' get $3m. Hearn set the money-grab agenda by over-inflating what he has available. Angel coming out with that in public kinda forces Hearn's hand to respond in public. Let's see if he does. He does like to be transparent, so I guess we will find out soon enough.

As for Danny's true value, well I agree with you in principle. But when you bring a lot of new finances into a market (in this case the boxer market) prices are forced up. Like when selling a house and a new buyer makes a counter offer. You push up the price....

He only references a $1bn if DAZN tell him to do so. Whether you believe he access to that is irrelevant as the PR would of been agreed between matchroom and DAZN and the number both parties would of agreed to announce to the world would be the $1bn.

Hearn is an idiot for making grandiose statements about the purses he can offer to fighters in America and how his backers' "pockets are deep". All that will happen now is that every US fighter will ask for tons of money.

It will be a football-like inflation. When you see **** poor footballers from the Championship command £10m+ transfer fees to Premier League relegation fodder. The same thing will happen in boxing now where shitty fighters are paid massive amounts in a tv broadcasting war. And who will suffer? The fans. More PPVs, just watch.

It may take awhile but eventually a bigger name star will get on board DAZN, and when that happens plenty of others will follow.
