excellent, thanks for the post, one things for sure angie did have a special relationship with his fighters
Great find cheers! I knew Ange would be high on Rodreguez, Ali and Leonard but Pastrano was a slight surprise.
Thanks for posting...Very glad that Angelo is talking about Rodriguez...Fantastic fighter. I agree with him, I had him over Griffith (another great) all four times too.
If perchance you could put Ray Leonard in a 200 pound body , he would whip Ali for sure. a lot of ali's rep was glitz, bouncing around without throwing punches, leg skipping etc. Leonard for his prime was the real McCoy...leonard was the better P4P, regardless what Dundee says...Methinks...
While you do have a point I think you've fundamentally misunderstood Ali. Leonard was without a doubt the more complete fighter, though.
I'm surprised that Angelo didn't rank Pastrano's chin right up there with Ali's...Willie was NEVER down in his career from a punch to the head. He was finally decked for the first time by that awful liver shot by Torres in his last fight.
B,tell me why I "fundamentally missunderstood" Ali ? Where have i not understood him ?Boxing is not quantum physics , I believe... Still believe that aside from the glitz and glamour Ray Leonard was much the better fighter...For one thing, much the sharper hitter IMO.
Not in necissarily in relation to Leonard, who I admire tremendously as a boxer (but the size difference makes all comparisons pretty difficult - I mean what HW would look good next to Leonard?). It's rather that you put Ali forward as some razz-matazz shoeshiner. I think Ali like few other fighters had a purpose with what he did. It may seem like he was just wasting everyones time when, like against Patterson in 1965, he just dances for the first round without throwing a punch. But for him this was all part of getting to the opponent: "you can't even deal with me when I'm not throwing punches, wait until I start punching". There's a video of him watching his fight against Ellis together with Cosell where he explains his philosphy concerning this. Ali may often look playful, or even disinterested, but it's almost always with a purpose. He works towards a point and when he gets there he is merciless. How many opponents have he had badly hurt, that he couldn't finish off? I can only think of Terrell, actually. And Shavers, but that was by a hair. When he went for the kill he was as sharp and ruthless as any HW ever. Just look at him, as a green kid, go after the monster Liston in rds 1 and 3. And his punching was sharp. I can't believe the ones who claim otherwise have really watched him.
