If Burt is offended by that he either needs to grow another layer of skin or find himself another forum. We hear far worse stuff than "up yer" being said in these boards, and especially in the Classic section when things get heated.
Are you for real? Do you actually think people don't remember the Jones fight? I can say for certain that I haven't seen one thread concerning Ali's qualities, or lack of them, that hasn't mentioned Doug Jones. Norton is also an obligatory as is Chuvalo, Mildenberger and often Sonny Banks.
The point seems to be that casuals also acknowledge Muhammad Ali's greatness, so he's frowned upon as a result by Johnstown.
Who said he was perfect? The Doug Jones fight was merely close. And he was up at 3 against 'Enry. That gets overblown.
bokaj..if you cant follow the conversation then dont jump in..my point is manbear and the chick seem to think that ali was perfect..and therefore anyone saying that ali had weakness is attacking him.... my point is..what burt said was fair
And I mostly find it unnecessary. Burt never use that kind of phrasing himself so it shouldn't be used against him. It was not vile in any sense, just unnecessary.
Absolutely unnecessary, as was Burt's comments regarding Muhammad Ali, a man who fought great opposition consistently and more often than not, came out on the winning end.
the point is you think that anyone who brings up any points about ali lacking some things as a fighter is somehow automatically wrong
I have followed the conversation. I was actually the first to call Burt out on that. And no one has said that Ali was perfect. No one. But the man proved himself against more quality opponents with more differing styles than any other HW, I'd say, so for anyone who knows Ali's career it seems very off to infer that he wasn't the real thing. That he, as a pretty green 21-year old, had a tough fight against a skilled and seasoned campaigner like Doug Jones doesn't change this in the slightest.
Burt didn't make a few constructive criticisms in my opinion, he implied he wasn't the real McCoy, and said he was mostly "glitz", "dancing around without throwing punches". It's a wonder Muhammad Ali won any fights at all.
