Look at his fighters technique and what they did wrong. He never corrected or improved on anything.

I agree it is very hard to know what a coach does but we can piece the puzzle together. Like Ali leaving Moore because he was quite technical with his approach. Like Dundee never gets technical in the corner.

As you know I like coaching so I always lookin for training videos, changes etc and try to see who are the good coaches and who aren't.

fair enough mate but he did work with others like rodriguez, valliant, sugar ramos, pastrano and one against the grain in carmen basilio. he must have imparted some good technical knowledge on those guys.not everyone needs it as little as ali and leonard.

Of course, don't get it twisted. Keep it in the context we are talking. We are comparing him to Futch, Steward and guys whose bread and butter was technique and skill.

Watch The Contender and you will see Dundee showing Manfredo how to fight more shoulder on and not square up. Obviously that is a basic example but it's something I've seen top coaches overlook.

Plus I forget who it was but Dundee learnt under a quality coach. I think it was Goldman, the man who coached The Rock. Though that isn't much to go by given the rocks technique but that is experience.

When it comes to the technical side of things I'd say Dundee was average. When it came to saying the right thing at the right time, he was a legend.

The only reason he spent more or less a whole career with Leonard and Ali is because he was dealing with egomaniacs who he let be egomaniacs. Leonard didn't listen to him when he warred v Duran and if Ali isn't listen to the Moore, he isn't listening to Dundee.

Cool. (I'm a second generation native to that area, with family roots there dating back to WW I.) To me, his diffident behavior during the Foreman/Moorer fight was one of the most memorable things about that event. (Calm as a cuke.)

As odd as this might seem, I still think of Fast Freddie Roach and Kevin Rooney in terms of their own boxing careers. (I vividly remember Roach/Capo as the first match I ever viewed on ESPN. For ten rounds, their fists were flashing blurs on the screen. He lost significant speed when he stepped up to LW.) I was convinced that Rooney was good enough to beat Davey Moore. As for Freddie Roach, well look at who his trainer was!

well i suppose the most blatant example is the rope a dope.you can hear dundee imploring ali to get off the ropes.to be fair dundee has never tried to take any credit for the strategy he always states that it was plain and simply down to ali on the night.

I would put this down as a time when a fighter knows himself better than anyone. Dundee doesn't take the shots, he doesn't really know how Ali thinks. Ali knew what he could and had to do. In hindsight when we know Alis chin and heart, it doesn't come off and so crazy.

As far as his two most famous fighters, know, but he did little things here and there to help. As far as the others , he was a great to very good trainer.

Combination of things. But he did well with the big egos and great fighters and knew how to control them and keep them focused. Didn't hurt that you were in the corner of guys like Ali and Leonard. You could put Mitt Romney in the corner of Ali and Leonard and he would win also. So it was a combination of Angelo being great and so were his fighters.
