Hey, I have been getting into my training recently and I have an reoccurring pain in my ankle that's holding me back. It's in my achilles tendon. I sprained my ankle bad enough before, I think it's from that.

If I do any bit of running (20+ minutes on the treadmill) or attempt any skipping at all, then it'll be really stiff and paining me the next day. Stops me doing anything two days in a row, and lots of stretching hasn't changed anything.

Has anybody had ankle problems like this?

Does anybody know any good stretches or exercises for strengthening your ankle? If I could do something to build it up, that'd be great.

I appreciate any help, googling the problem hasn't gotten me anywhere, next step after this might be an MRI.

Same thing thing happens to me except with my knees, i've some kind of Paul McGrath problem with them. I use a lot of movement in a fight/spar, and my knees are always ****ed after, same when I play football. I'd imagine you'd have to se a physio, that's probably what i'll end up doing.

See a doctor or something mate, no one can see what the problem is on the internet. May be an inflammation, may be a damaged tendon or something else, just get someone to look at it.

I'd agree with this. I snapped my ankle 7 years ago and was on crutches for 3 months. But it took me 2 years to really get over it because I was lazy with the physio. You need to get an X ray first of all and a medical opinion but definitely see a physio therapist too if your serious about training.

I used to suffer from a really sore achilles after running or rope work which meant that I couldn't do it for more than 2/3 days in a row without having to take a break. Not sure if it's the same as yours because from what you've written you're only feeling it in one ankle?

For me it was caused by a combination of wearing unsuitable footwear (i.e. there was no gel or anything like that to absorb the shock whenever my feet hit the ground), training on hard surfaces, and having weak calf muscles. The calf naturally stabilises the ankle and knee so because mine were weak then it meant the ankle was being put under more stress than it should have been, hence the pain and stiffness.

So yeah, like I said, I dunno if you're suffering from the same thing but here's the best I can offer you in terms of a solution: develop your calves. Dumbell calf raises did the trick for me but it did take quite a while before I got decent results. Get some decent running shoes (Asics Nimbus 12's are the **** but New Balance 562's are a good option if your budget ain't up to much), and if possible try training on a bouncier surface. Pretty basic stuff but it helped me out big time. I'd consider seeing a doctor as well because it sounds like there's a chance you've got achilles tendonitis.

    Thanks for the replies lads

Going off my ass and get my ankle checked out, hopefully it's not tendonitis. I'm really bad at going to do things like this but I know if there's a real problem, then running away on it could cause me a lot of problems in the long run.

Thanks for the tips as well One Bomb, going to do work on my lower legs in the meantime, I'm sure it'll be a help either way. Going to get some new shoes as well, I got a feeling my current ones, even if they're not the source of my problems, they're probably not helping things. I'm going to look into the ones you suggested.

don't try and run through achilles pain.it won't work.
the problem could be solved by changed your running shoes or it could be a sign that something else is wrong.hopefully not.

Sounds like you got achilles tendonitis which I've had for years. Like yourself, I get pain in my achilles after a hard run, skipping plyros etc...the worst time is when you wake up in the morning and you cant walk properly.

Talk to your doctor first priority. See a podiatrist who will assess your foot properly and recommend othotics/and shoes that suit your feet based on different factors inc training

Whatever you do stay away from the cortisone injections and have plenty of rest. Don't even think about running/skipping until your recovered properly or your just gonna aggravate it and make it worse which is what I've done because I thort I was superman! Highly recommend swimming or bike riding

Is tendonitis treatable, like does it go away if you look after it right, or is it something that will always bother you?

it does go away in as quick as 2 weeks if you catch it quick enough, look it up for treatment options

Get a doctor to check it out to make sure it is Achilles tendonitis...could be something else. Like panther said, will heal properly if treated early. Currently I've been told to stay off running for the next 3-4 weeks. No heavy leg presses or any other exercises that put a lot of stress on the ankles/achilles. I use hot/cold treatment, spa and light calf, foot stretching exercises. Plus I use some magic cream from my chinese naturopath

for my two cents worth i would start taking notice of how i run if i were. If you run and you can hear your feet slapping the ground you know you have a technique problem. Even good shoes dont help if you are running incorrectly. Surprised nobody has suggested a regular self massage of both legs and a complete stretching exercise for straight after your run is over.
