Yet so many people have thrown Broner in the scrap heap after one loss. A loss doesn't ruin your career, but it sure can have a big negative impact on your earning potential. As far as Russell, he's basically experienced the side effects of having a lot of eyes on you. There's numerous top fighters who where fighting nobodies at 24/25. However, people where indifferent towards them so it didn't matter.
I think it depends how you lose aswell though, Broner was a shambles in there and if he doesn't fix that defence and footwork more losses will be coming soon.
Broner certainly needs to make improvements. His situation though does show how a loss can negatively affect your earning potential. Fighters need to be calculated. You're going to need to take risks at times, but it has to be the right situation. One loss can hurt your career. 2 or 3 could derail it.
Mainly because Broners loss wasn't a result of too much too soon, it was a result of his severe lack of dedication.
It was both. You're going to have a hard time finding other fighters who fought championship caliber fighters at their 3rd division at age 24. Another example is Devon Alexander. No one is going to question his dedication. He's very disciplined and he's been fighting top fighters for years now. However, he lost twice to 2 undefeated fighters. His career has been derailed, and he's derided by the fans as a hype job. Losses come with a price in boxing.
Exactly right. That is no shame in losing. It's more important in how you lose, and how you come back. If you lose to Pac by decision like JMM did, then come back and KTMO, then no body hardly remembers the decision loss. If you lose by devastating KO like Bute did against Froch, then lose by UD to Pascal, then people will say you a bum and a hype. Anyway, in today's boxing market, you can fall down in the 4th round and still collect a $5M check. In my eyes, this is a win/Win situation.
you spittin the truth SSG look at hopkins and marquez as you mentioned in this thread: http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=501596
But Russell is not yet in the position to earn big bank. He does not possess the huge amateur background like Loma or the media backing. Loma got $100,000 for his 1st Pro fight. Russell ain't got it like that. So, his management is working him up slowly, getting skills so one day he can finally move up and get big dollars. Talented or not talented, this is how today's boxing business position fighters by having undefeated records. Look, had Bute been defeated he probably wouldn't have been so successful in generating all that hype that got him the Froch fight. At the time, I said that he had fought no one, while others said that he would murder everyone of the Super6 contestants. Like it or not, today an undefeated record can SELL the hype. Look at Joe Calzaghe and the excellent job FW did in positioning him. He's average, but undefeated.
