Another (additional) reason Floyd left HBO for Showtime: Lampley's nascent racism?

jim lampley and larry merchant are freaking dinosaurs. They've done a lot for boxing but I can't wait until they retire.

As it stands right now Showtime is BLOWING Them out of the water. Its the Jetsons vs the Flintstones out here sons.

 

In 2007, the then 57-year-old Lampley was taken into custody and booked on the felony charge and investigation of violating a restraining order and dissuading a witness, both misdemeanors.

Police were conducting a followup interview for a domestic violence complaint at the residence of Sanders, 28, when Lampley showed up at the residence.

Court records show that Sanders said that Lampley attacked her in her Encinitas apartment on New Year's Eve.

HBO have been dickriding certain fighters (some on and off, and others continually) for about a decade. There are 2 possible reasons for this:

a) They are being paid by the fighter's team to present him positively, or
b) It is a marketing strategy on the part of HBO

I believe both factors might be at play, but more often b is. If you watch Wladimir Klitschko's fights that appeared on HBO before he lost to Corrie Sanders, the commentators were dickriding Wladimir pretty hard. On the HBO version of the Sanders fight you'll hear Jim and Larry have a mini meltdown when Wladimir is knocked down. At times they sound frantic. When a fighter you like loses, you will be disappointed, resentful, etc. but never anxious, as they sounded. Why would they be anxious? Probably because 1 or both of they told their bosses at HBO that it made business sense to dickride him. Even though in absolute numbers Whites might constitute the majority of boxing fans in America, on a per capita basis Whites are probably underrepresented as boxing fans. Perhaps by dickriding Wladimir they thought tap into a potential white audience.

How this relates to Pacquiao and De La Hoya is unclear. Perhaps in Pacquiao HBO thought it could bring in more of the Asian market. However, it might be argued that there might not be enough Asians in America to bother with this tactic (I don't live in America so I don't know). You wouldn't think they would have to dickride De La Hoya that hard because the Latino was already very large. But in may not always come down to race: De La Hoya was a good-looking chap (no homo), and before the **** and cross-dressing allegations, he seemed like a very nice guy. Perhaps they just thought he was very marketable.

It is interesting that HBO are now dickriding Broner. Perhaps they feel that with Mayweather's career coming to an end, they need a new prospect for the black audience to take to, because they haven't seemed to do so very strongly with Bradley or Ward.

HBO have always had a bee in their bonnet when it came to Floyd. Perhaps HBO have always have trouble negotiating with him. It isn't completely one-sided either. Floyd has said some unflattering **** about the HBO team.

If HBO had problems with black fighters in general, you might have a case. But as far as I can see it is mostly Floyd they are harsh on (and really they aren't that harsh). In addition Merchant dislikes Hopkins. But let's be honest: both Hopkins and Mayweather have made racist remarks against whites so you can't expect Jim or Larry to love them.
