Nope I meant "once in a lifetime" I'm sure you can count in your fingers boxers who have won titles in four (or five if you count Ring magazine's title) weight divisions, knocking out sho-ins for hall-of-fame in the process. There are lots of good boxers in the Philippines just doesn't get to fight in the US.
De la hoya, who is still active, has already done all that. There would have been many more had there been as many weight classes back in the day as there are now. The phillipines will never have another fighter as great as manny but he as far the rest of the boxers all time there have been LOTS better than him. JMM for one.
Time will decide how they will be remembered in history. Now, as far as JMM is concerned, technically JMM was down 4 times in the 2-times they met, drew once and lost once. JMM is great in the fact that he didn't suffer the fate of his compatriots Barrera and Morales, fighters which are looked upon by a lot of people as greater than JMM. :thumbsup We may not be as great as Mexico when it comes to boxing, but the Philippines has managed to produce our share of greats for a small nation where boxing isn't really part of the culture. I am not even going to say that we are one of the top 5 boxing nations. Just like people of any other country, we're just a people who find joy in the little things our countrymen have managed to accomplish. :good
Bernabe Concepcion is a good prospect. He has power and good boxing skill to face decent fighters, but I think he's not yet ready for topnotch fights. He still need to be honed for some fights first, from there this kid has a future.
I heard he'd be gunning for Steve Luevano's featherweight belt under Pavlik-Hopkins, so we'll see how he performs against a championship-caliber fighter:bbb
I and the majority of boxing fans thought JMM won both fights so I agree with you in that it demonstrates his greatness in outboxing a fighter for several rounds in impressive fashion. Its hard to compare JMM to MAB and Morales in that JMM never had the careers the two great mexicans had. Manny was pretty much JMM's first super fight whereas MAB and Morales had several memorable wars before either Manny or JMM were even heard of. You could almost seperate them when it comes to eras. It's still undecided how history will view JMM. If he wins his next fight I think he makes his case as HOFer. However, it might to little to late for him to fulfuill all of his potential.
disregard my vote. I clicked no right away without noticing the 3rd option. as of right now, no, but maybe in the future. he's fighting in a pretty good division too.
Freddie Roach was interviewed yesterday in a Philippine radio and he said that Berbnabe Concepcion may take a crack at the 126 WBO crown of Steve Levuano this October.
And Roach said he likes the match-up and that Bernabe Concepcion is ready for a title shot. Here's the link to the interview>>> With added bonus...Roach talks about Pacman-Dela Hoya saying it's still under negotiations.
I voted too early to tell. He seems to have a decent chin, but he's too hittable ATM, and that spells trouble if ever he faces a top 10 fighter in his devision. I hope he develops his power and learns how to cleanly and solidly hit, every punch that he throws. And he doesnt throw enough combos.
Lately he does seem to be rather stingy with his combos but maybe he doesn't need to throw that much because the fights ended early. Watch his other US fights and you'll see that he does throw a lot of combos. I also liked watching his fight against Ruiz where he was totally drained, I heared he didn't have time to adjust to Queretaro's altitute coming in the venue only a couple of days before the fight, still he had enough heart to win that fight using combination punching and footwork.
