Mike Perez (Ismaikel Perez) has defected from Cuba and just made his pro debut in Ireland winning by TKO in 1.

He made it to the finals of the 2007 Cuban National Championships (Lost to Osmay Acosta 18-14) and was the 2004 Junior World Champion.

He is a 22 year old Southpaw

I would think that in post-Castro Cuba they will finally allow athletes to turn pro so the US doesn't keep on luring away their best athletes with the Yankee dollar. Cuba will no doubt be a big force on the world boxing scene then, just as is eastern Europe now that they've permitted their athletes to turn pro.

It's almost ridiculous that every one that escapes is very good. Shows you how much potential Cuba has.

I'm hoping he maintains better shape than his peer, Solis.

I was looking at Solis as an Am and then as a pro, and it looks like he let himself go a bit. Don't get me wrong the skill looks like it's still there, but I'd like to see a guy that can dedicate himself to be in the best shape possible. Not these blown-up heavies. I'll be keeping an eye on this guy.

Cuba might be the lone foothold the HW division has in the Western Hemisphere.

Cuba always shows good competition in boxing and in baseball along with Republica Dominicana they are some of the best players.

Sounds like a promising heavyweight, could he be the dominant heavyweight that we've been all looking for? I think so, of course after Wlad is done with his career.

:bart :rofl I hope you're kidding because people are saying this often and is pure BS and propaganda.

That said the same about rigondeaux' family. All BS. The only thing that happened is that they see Guillermo as a traitor and the Cuban boxing federation wan't nothing to do with him anymore. Sad, but killing families...:bart NO way. It's a socialist country not terrorist country:yep
