The good news: He's a skilled Heavyweight, and that can only help boxing. The bad news: Cuban Heavyweights have a habit of spending too much time at the buffet once they defect because there's no weight limit to adhere to. How disciplined he is in this regard will go a long way towards how far he'll go.
omfg  You're right man. Look who he has beaten at the ams:shock: Compared to how HE got beat at the pro's.. Gonzalez compiled an Amateur Record of 220-13. He's hardly living it up in Cork to be fair and he's signed to a small promotional team so he isn't going to have gotten a big signing on fee to spend . The only way he's going to make it is to knuckle down and make himself a good pro . He is being trained by a former Cuban amateur trainer by the name of Cruz(don't knw his first name) which is how the link to Ireland came about and why he is here . Incase anyway is worried about the small promotional team he is attached to , I'm sure they will link themselves to Brian Peters(Ireland's main promoter) who is starting to become one of the main promoters in Europe after the big boys of Warren , Sauerland and Kohl .
Interesting to hear that another Cubas HW prospect started his pro career. Do we know to which promotions did he went?
Can't some of these boxers just move here? I don't know why it's so hard for them to escape Cuba, escpecially if these guys want to turn pro.
This guy will be the Irelands first heavyweight champ after the near miss of the talented Kevin Mc Bride
But as I pointed out some unknown Irish dude(Paschal Collins) with connections to Ireland's biggest promoter Brian Peters , and look all of a sudden Perez is fighting on the undercard of Andy Lee's fight on Saturday(which is a Peter's card) . Professional boxing is starting to boom in Ireland and there is going to be plenty of low key , medium attention and high key cards to fight on(which wasn't the case in the past) . The Lee card is only a medium attention sort of card but it is the first professional card in Lee's home City of Limerick and will be attened by over 2500 people and televised on national television at prime time on a Saturday night . Pretty much all of Brian Peters cards are televised on national television and if Perez can start making waves it would be very easy for him to gain a big following here .
