Don't forget that Lewis beat Tyson who beat Holmes who beat Ali. Ottke is not only the #1 pound for pound but also the #1 heavyweight of all time. Green's victory proves it!
When was Roy Jones good on Calzaghe's legacy ? He was clearly over the hill when Calzaghe embarressed him in New York. The question you have to ask yourself is would anyone in the Super 6 , Bute , Pavlik or Dawson beat Calzaghe ? The answer is NO
Eubank and Hopkins weren't past it according to their records and last fights. In fact Hopkins had never performed so good. If y'all want to make excuses any fan can return a bunch right back at ya. For instance, who doesnt think that Judah and Gatti were not shot and over rated when they fought Floyd? Who doesnt think that Hatton and Marquez were to small. Plus, Hatton was just outboxed by Collazzo. Baldomir had been thouroughly dominated by Clottey. Who did Jesus Chavez beat? On the other hand Lacey was gaining a Tyson like persona when Calzaghe ruined him.
If Calzaghe was a nicer guy and would simply beat other fighters instead of destroying their confidence, ability, and faces with his insane skills, then maybe the guys he beat would have gone on, done great things, and cemented his legacy. Unfortunately, he beat the living **** out of them and now they're unable to win, so he must have beaten a bunch of overrated bums. To anyone who hates Calzaghe and his resume, I'd love to hear you throw out a few names of fighters that he should have fought before hanging up his gloves. Dawson? Calzaghe win = "Dawson was overrated, nobody liked him anyway." Ward? Calzaghe win = "Congratulations, you just beat a guy with 19 fights that nobody has ever heard of, and you made about 5 bucks in the process." Hopkins Rematch? Calzaghe win = "Hopkins is even more past his prime now than he was the first time...Joe just wanted another payday." Froch? Calzaghe win = "Froch is a bum, we all knew he would lose, and they fought in Britain instead of Calzaghe taking on an American. Americans are so much better at boxing than the British..." Abraham? Hell, I'd love to see it, but it wasn't exactly an option back then. Calzaghe win = "Well who has Abraham beaten anyway?" Bute? Again, I'd love to see it, but Calzaghe win = "Well who has Bute beaten? Overrated." Johnson? Calzaghe win = "Johnson loses for a living, he's old, and Dawson already beat him." Tarver? Calzaghe win = "Already lost to Dawson and Hopkins. Proves nothing." Pavlik? Calzaghe win = "Well Pavlik came up in weight, and we all saw what hopkins did to him. Proves nothing." Now if Calzaghe had fought all of these guys and won, then I can't see how anybody could doubt his legacy. But the fact is, none of these guys would have had a chance, with the exception of Hopkins, possibly Dawson, and maaaaaybe Ward. It's too bad Calzaghe was unfortunate enough to be extremely good and not very well known in America. Jones and Hopkins would have fought him in their primes, but the risk to reward ratio was too great, and they were both busy fighting nobodies in the US. Guess them's the breaks...
Calzaghe didn't meet his Jermain Taylor, or his Andre Ward, or his Danny Green - in over a decade as a champion and a guy who spent the last 5 years of his career in P4P lists... he's done enough that regardless of what any of his opponents do, he's got a secure legacy. One of the highest ever title fights per fight ratio of any fighter, never lost and fought the majority of his career with severe problems in his hands - the guy is a lock for HOF and a lock for ATG through weight of achievement. He fought enough dangerous contenders in his time to prove he was good - he proved he was great in dominant performances against fighters he wasn't a clear favorite in, such as Reid, Woodhall, Kessler, Lacy, Hopkins, etcetera. Calzaghe did dare to be great, he tried to get in the ring with Hopkins earlier, he tried to get guys like Jones Jr to take him seriously and he tried to fight Ottke/Beyer but they constantly rebuked him. Ultimately, his career is probably as good as Hopkins if we're being honest, Hopkins has losses as a black mark against his more credible victories, Calzaghe has questions over his credible victories but no losses to speak of.
calzaghe fought jones at LHW. this was a cruiser fight and the temple shot undid roy, although I am not sure it should have been stopped... greens punches were not landing cleanly.
calzaghe is retired man. jones should retire now 2 b honest he should have retired after the fight with calzaghe. roy was done after that fight.
Hopkins has five notable wins. Wright, Tarver, Pavlik, De La Hoya, Trinidad. Calzaghe has three notable wins Hopkins, Kessler, Reid. Both have a series of also-rans Hopkins has his Glen Johnson, William Joppy, Antwun Echols, Eastman, Allen type fights Calzaghe has his Bika's, Veit's, Woodhalls, Lacy and Mitchells. Hopkins lost to Calzaghe in their fight, also lost to Jones Jr in his earlier days and whether or not you want to mark it as a loss (I had him winning) with Jermain Taylor x 2, the fact was he didn't dispatch Jermain Taylor in either attempt I don't dispute Hopkins has the more credible wins, although I would argue that Kessler despite the Ward result is a more credible fight at 168 than De La Hoya was at 160 and potentially Wright was at that weight too. But... the losses Hopkins has, has to impact his standing - Calzaghe has none of those losses.
48-0 Hopkins couldn't beat him Roy Jones couldn't beat him Mikkel Kessler (then undefeated) couldn't beat him Lacy (then undefeated) couldn't beat him Chris Eubank couldn't beat him Reid, Sheika, Bika, Veit, Mitchell, Ashira, Brewer, Woodhall all tried and failed. Danny Green would lose to JC. So would Ward, Dawson, Pavlik and Bute. But then you'd say these guys are all overrated.
