How does him criticising Diaz for not showing up mean it's an attempt to promote the fight? Why would anyone be more interested in watching the fight if Diaz no showed the press conference? Makes no sense to me. I could understand if they were pushing and shoving at the weigh-in or something like that but seriously, criticising Diaz for not showing to the press conference? I can't see how you's are coming to this, I really can't.
You think Dana's not going to criticize Jones for forcing the unprecedented cancellation of an entire event a week out from the card? :blood After that happened, what happens next? You make do. Hendo doesn't get rewarded for concealing a serious injury and forcing Jones into the position of either cancelling an event or making a title defence against a different guy on a week's notice - that's fair enough. Machida doesn't get rewarded for turning down a free title shot - again, fair enough. Sonnen, one of the UFC's most valued and dependable employees, DOES get rewarded for being willing to step up and fight anyone, anywhere, anytime. That sends a message to all the other fighters - go the extra mile, get the extra opportunities. Sonnen sells more PPVs for a title challenge than Hendo or Machida does, and Jones will be making a fat stack of cash for being a reigning champion doing a coaching gig on TUF as well. What Jones thinks a week before the event may not be the same thing as what he thinks four months out from a scheduled title defence. Dana surely was pissed, but he got over it pretty quickly, as he tends to do. There's a long list of fighters who have been on Dana's **** list and then been given good fights, new contracts etc. He saw an opportunity to revitalize TUF, and he went for it. Not much of a good vs evil matchup, considering it's been nothing but smiles and handshakes between Jones and Sonnen. In fact there's been virtually no rivalry between them at all - Sonnen is clearly focused on helping his guys, and Jones is focused on not getting beaten by Sonnen. But there's been zero in the way of beefing between them, and this was known even before the show aired. Sonnen has come off as a great guy, there's no villain involved. :-( It helps business to not have any clips or soundbites to play on sports shows leading up to the fight? An empty chair at a press conference is better than having Diaz looking tough and surly and snarling at reporters asking dumb questions? :huh And if it's such good business, why is it that after years of the UFC, Diaz is the only one to pull this ****? Why has Diaz had fights cancelled because he insists on pulling this ****? Nobody makes any money off a cancelled fight. :-( :hat
Listen to the question at 11:00 and Dana's answer. Couldn't have avoided it more could he? Not like Dana to swerve a black and white answer like that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=36YMvdgOZFE#! And when I said good V evil I was talking about GSP V Diaz
End of the day, people love him for what he does in the ring, and that's what MMA is about. If it becomes all about press conferences, and bull**** outside of the ring, it's more like MTV.. At one point in history that t.v. station actually played music videos. But slowly was overtaken by bull**** drama. When the bull**** drama is more important than the fights, we may as well be watching MTV. I want to watch the real drama, what happens inside the ring brother! :!:
