    Hi, I'm Michael.

I've been wanting to get into boxing for years. I'm 23 now. I don't know much about it, though. I want to be an amateur for now, but maybe eventually turn pro. I've measured myself just to see where I'd fit. I'm 6' 5 2/3" tall and weigh 306 lbs. My reach is a little over 78".

My main questions are... where do I start when there are no local boxing gyms and how do you choose a style? Do you pick one and work at it, or just fall into one?

There used to be a gym here, but it had so low membership that I went a few times and ended up sparring with someone 5' 8" and 141 lbs... they eventually closed...also, someone there called me a slugger. Is that a compliment?

hmmm if you can drive you might just have to drive to the nearest gym, it doesn't always work out great for everyone.

I would say generally you naturally fall into a type of style that best suits your size. If your short and stocky, naturally people will want you to get on the inside and hit the body, and of course if your tall and rangy use it to keep distance.

If they called you a slugger thats maybe how you were boxing, taking punishment to give it. It doesn't seem as though you've had much training though which would suggest to me you need to develop a style you are comfortable with, that may still be slugging.

As your looking for a gym the only thing I can suggest is getting fit (if you arn't already) before you go.

wow your a big dude aint ya! if i were you i would find a boxing gym in youre area and go see the coach. They may have called you a slugger because you took big shots at the other guy and/or didnt use boxing skills when throwing your punches. Considering your inexperience and the fact you had to spar a midget im surprised they let you in the sparring ring!! The little guy must have been good or very brave:bbb :nut:!: :rofl

As far as your style goes....you will find the style thats fits you like a glove eventually. All the best and good luck with finding a good gym to train out of mate.:good

just noticed you said there were no gyms in your area. Most countries have an Amateur association that can direct you to a gym nearest to you. What country are you in?? im sure somebody in this forum can help you with a contact number that can help you.

I'm in Missouri, USA. :) Found out the nearest gym is in Arnold (about a 40 min drive, but I'm willing to take it)

I'm sort of 50/50. Have fat, but I lift weights for fun. Definitely need to slim down a bit, though.
