It is VERY important to understand that MMA is not boxing, and as such, while roadwork is important, it CANNOT be the end all be all of conditioning. People call gassing "cardio" or whatever, but when they just call it "cardio" they don't really know what they are talking about. In the free movement phase of combat all you need is good cardiovascular fitness to not gas, this much is true. However, when you are clinch or groundfighting, all the running in the world will NOT help your endurance. Why? Boxing and kickboxing are mostly aerobic activities, while wrestling is mostly ANAEROBIC. As such, you need the ability to use your muscles anaerobically for long periods of time, and that requires muscle endurance. This sort of musle endurance can be achieved in a few different ways, circuit training or sledgehammering or flipping the tire or whatever, but the point is you want to train your muscles to operate anaerobically without losing your ability to use them. You know how when you do your absolute most reps of a very high bench a couple of sets, how after just doing one single solitary pushup can become nearly impossible? THAT is the type of gassing they are trying to avoid...
:huh Well I didn't really know the difference then, having to train for something anaerobic and aerobic must be very difficult, this sport truly is the toughest in the world.
Yeah, just think of my benching analogy. After doing that much weight, you could still probably run as many laps around the track as ever, because certain muscles were exhausted due to the anaerobic stress, but your cardiovascular system is still probably just fine.
Wandy did much better than i expected and fought in a very controlled manner with plenty of head movement. Its sad though as he looked like an old man in there.I really dont want to see him get hurt again so im glad it went the distance.
