Another way to look at the "B-Hop only fought smaller men" theory...

IMO, Hopkins's 5 best wins are:

    Trinidad
    Tarver
    Pascal II
    Pavlik
    Glen Johnson

    So...

Hopkins - natural mw, spent vast majority of his championship career at mw

Trinidad - natural ww, spent majority of his championship career at ww, therefore a naturally smaller man than B-Hop

Tarver - natural lhw, spent entire championship career at lhw, therefore a naturally larger man than B-Hop

Pascal - natural smw/lhw, so far spent majority of championship career at lhw, therefore a naturally larger man than B-Hop

Pavlik - natural mw/smw, so far spent majority of championship career at mw, therefore the same natural size as Hopkins

Johnson - natural smw/lhw, as spent vast majority of championship career at smw and lhw, therefore naturally larger man than Hopkins

Judging guys by the weight they spend the majority of their championship careers at, Hopkins's best wins are over 1 smaller man, 1 the same size, and 3 larger. Simple facts here :good

Or you could look at the actual size difference at fight night:

Tarver was bigger. Pavlik the same size.

The rest: Pascal, GJ, Trinidad, Oscar, Winky clearly smaller.

Tarver, Pascal and Johnson...you've pretty much exposed yourself and Hopkins on this one.

You know, if Hopkins spent most of his wins bullying, overpowering, beating and knocking out guys mostly by brute strength, then I could sympathize and agree with the notion that Hopkins' legacy has benefitted by fighting "smaller guys".

But the fact is, he didn't. He mostly relied on his skill and intelligence. He was never the most gifted fighter physically. So even if those smaller guys were the same size as him (or bigger), it still wouldn't have made any difference. He still would have schooled Pavlik (who wasn't even smaller than him). He still would have beaten Oscar (maybe not have knocked him out). He still would have handed Tito his first defeat.

Hopkins weighed in lower then Trinidad so he could shut the critics up. The fact remains that Trinidad was a natural JMW byt the time they fought and so was Oscar.
Hopkins was a average middleweight who usually weighed less then 168 and achieved most of his glory at a age when others were on their way out.

Notice how few people talk about Hagler only fighting smaller men :think

    Leonard, Duran, Hearns?

At least if we're talking about where they started, since we all know Hearns was a freak in terms of size.

    Sugar Ray Leonard (Welterweight)
    Roberto Duran (Lightweight)
    Thomas Hearns (Welterweight)

They all moved up to fight Hagler at middleweight.

:rofl I was simply suckering him in to own him because the Hagler argument is the most stupid one I've heard.

As if those three compare to Hopkins' opposition.

So you admit Hagler's best wins were against smaller men? or men moving up from their best weight class :think
