But this one has a slightly different look at the situation. :good I'm a massive Hatton fan, I love the way he used to fight and on a personal level think he's a cracking bloke but for me his Witter getting beat last night may prove just as damaging for him as it will for junior Witter. With Witters frankly awful performance last night Hatton lost his one oppertunity for redemption from those who question the calibre of his opposition and his 'domination' at 140. In Witter we had the ultimate opponent for Hatton, he would have come cheap and had a pretty flawless reputation as the official world number one. I have no doubts now that Hatton would have destroyed junior and had he have done that pre- Bradley even his most hardened critic would have had to concede we had seen something 'special'. Hattons delaying of the bout has robbed him of his chance of true greatness because in reality he could unify against Torres, Maligianni and Kotelnik and no one would really care all that much when its looked back on historically. It reminds me of the lightmiddles ten years back when we had Steve Roberts, Gary Lockett, Wayne Alexander, Richard Williams, Antony Farnell, Takaloo and Ryan Rhodes all operating at the same time and for one reason another the fights never really happened and they all got bumped off by lesser fighters or 'unknown' internationals. Had one of them got a set of victories over the others then they would have being big stars nationally. For me Witter L12 Bradley is much more devastating for Ricky then his LTKO Mayweather, he's lost a great oppertunity fow what would have being considered a great victory. Witter fell apart under pressure- like I felt he would vs Hatton and his boxing looked dis jointed and crude- much like he was as a novice. Real shame.... I wanted Witter to get his shot.
I was firmly in the camp that felt Junior hadn't done enough to demand the fight But I still felt that it would come in 2009 I'm a Hatton fan but it's only the events of last night that have made me realise Junior actually was a massive fight waiting to happen, and yes, Hatton has actually missed a major opportunity
Good post Jeff. Its Hattons fault he missed this opportunity. He'd have got massive credit for beating Witter. He'd get far less if he fought him in the future. Still, possible future wins against the likes of Malignagi and Bradley might serve him well.
Agree totally. Imagine if he had signed to fight Witter in his comeback fight, and how many would be picking Witter by KO and Witters stock was as high as it has ever been. Huge kudos for taking that danger as your first fight after loss, and then Hatton pummels him for 12 rounds, smashing him all over the ring and dropping him late to win an easy UD. He would have got massive credit even from his haters like Scurla, obviously within 3 months they would have a new axe to grind. But still. Instead Witters lazy, sloppy issues have been highlighted by a bit of an unknown and Hatton is in a pointless fight that I can't even be arsed watching.
To me Hatton beating Witter would not have enhanced his career that much.He would have been just shutting a mouth up and beating one of several fighters in this division who are much of a muchness.Hatton is a cut above the 140 fighters.Welterweight is where its at and that is how he can cement his reputation as one of Britains finest. We all know that it is a tall order for the Hitman in that division, however this is what he needs to do after Lazcano and Malignaggi IMO
But it would have given us the British fans something to talk about for along time. Big domestic clashes are always good for the public and definetly better than Hatton vs Lazcano/Maligfaggi or any other 140 fighter. I am sure all those that wanted Witter's mouth shutting would have loved it to have been Hatton dishing out a beating last night. The fight would have gone down in history on these shores and unless Hatton fights Cotto, Mayweather, Williams or another top rated 147 we probably will not get that kind of excitment. Hatton has missed out bigstyle. Witter has not missed out apart from he avoided a bad loss.
Yeah, I agree too. I have no doubt Hatton would have beaten him last night, or his best night. However, a win over him would have been a great feather in his cap. Shame it didn't happen. I think it works both ways though, as many fans will also say in hindsight "If he did beat, it wouldn't have meant that much though, as Bradley showed he was beatable". Still, Malignaggi is now the best light welterweight by a distance so he fills the same gap that Witter left. Hatton has another chance to prove himself against the number one contender, and it's a fight he can win. I doubt he'll get the same props as Malignaggi isn't seen as much of a threat to Hatton as Witter was, even though I may pick Malignaggi to beat Hatton. Doesn't he have a record of picking fighters to beat Hatton and then making excuses after the fight? I'm sure we'd be hearing how Witter was old or some other rubbish.
If hatton gets done over by lazcano (possible but slim) then a witter hatton fight could still be a biggy
I have no interest in that fight anymore. Hatton-Cotto or Pacman are the only big fights left, unless Campbell beats Casamoyer and Diaz - or Diaz redeems himself. Witter- Hatton has no bite anymore.
I want to see a fight with Zab. A focussed Zab will beat Hatton without many problems. If the money was there I am sure Zab would shed the weight to fight RH at 147. The other one I would stay up to watch would be against Cotto. A fight against Malignaggi means nothing but this will be Hattons next fight after his upcoming bout.
As I recall, Kostya Tszyu had a pretty flawless reputation as one of the top three pound for pound in the World after confirming his fitness and form in destroying Sharmba Mitchell. If people really question the calibre of Hatton's opposition, then there would be plenty of ways for them to dismiss Witter as well if Hatton had beaten him - level of his opposition, age (I've already seen people saying that Witter 'aged overnight' against Bradley, though it's possible they've blanked out the memory of any of Witter's previous fights....)
If i was Hatton i would fight Bradley straight away:yep Witter has always been a blevel fighter, and he got exposed off a decent fighter last night. Ive always said that Hatton isnt made for Witter, its actually Witter that is made for Hatton. Hatton should make the Bradley fight and have it in Bradford.
nice thread i agree with what your saying, but too be honest i dont think its a great oppurtunity hes lost because i dont think hatton would have ever thought him, i also thought witter would fail under pressure but not against bradley i expected last nights outcome against hatton but i thought he would have too much for bradley, hatton and witter would have never happened but too be honest i think its more likely now, looking at witter last night hatton would eat him alive IMO
