Anselmo Moreno vs. Javier Nicolas Chacon, 12 rounds @ bantamweight

 

I am glad Anselmo Moreno is finally back in action tonight. I had been very much looking forward to his WBA bantamweight unification ("super" vs "regular") fight with Koki Kameda, unfortunately Kameda vacated his "regular" belt in January rather than going through with the purse bid. So Moreno instead gets to defend his title against BoxRec's #101 ranked bantamweight, Javier Chacon. Moreno fighting William Urina and now Chacon in Panama in his last two fights is a HUGE step down for him, after his previous three fights were all in the USA, all nationally televised on Showtime. But Moreno is kind of stuck right now, the bantamweight division is currently utterly devoid of any fighters of interest to American networks, and he is too small to consider moving up. Probably his best chances of a "big" fight currently depend on him travelling to either Japan (three of BoxRec's current top four bantamweights), or, oddly, the UK (three of BoxRec's current top 25 bantamweights). He needs to do SOMETHING big, because otherwise it would be a terrible shame if one of the best boxers in the world was stuck with just defending his title in Panama against mediocre opponents.

 

Its a shame how Moreno has been ignored by Showtime after he the excellent fights he had against Mares. Hopefully he can get with Top Rank or Goosen and we can see a Rigo-Moreno fight.

Round 1

Moreno is sticking his long right jab down on the belt line of Chacon. Moreno is playing the up-and-down game, confusing Chacon with varying patterns of head and body jabs, throwing a majority of them one way and then switching or at times completely randomizing. Moreno sticks out his right forearm, turned aside to make a defensive shield between jabs. Chacon is unable to get anything past it. Chacon down as Moreno stick a left on the body, ruled a slip.

Its a joy to watch Moreno box. he looks a lot better starting of than his last fight. Controling range nicely with the jab up and down, less movement and more defense by keeping range and just stepping out and circling. Nice hooks and straights as well and Chacon is already reduced to trying to charge in.

You can say that again. Moreno is a class apart from most bantams and Chacon honestly isn't world class...
