Collins is extremely underrated. Never gave a bad fight. Think he gives a lot of greats a run for their money tbh. He was a very good fighter in a great era.
He definitely proved his ability against the very best slicksters in Reggie and Sumbu. He caught Reggie frequently with this really sneaky short counter overarm right at an angle, on Showtime in front of Ali at ringside. Many scored it for Collins. Johnson was on fire in the 11th round though and looked like a better Roy Jones but southpaw version. His KD of Toney was far more impressive than Roy's KD of him, too. Great talent. Steve was able to land more on Sumbu K than any previous opponent ever was. Lots and lots of sharp combinations for 12 rounds, although many were made to miss too by that defensive maestro. Collins out worked him and should've got that
This is what you typed: ”He had balance issues due to brain damage” “His bobbing and weaving looked better than ever” “It was like watching a prime Joe Frazier” “He quit twice” “It was incredible” “It was otherworldly” How can we even debate if you’re being serious? You’d make an amazing author. There’s nothing incredible about beating a shot fighter who had a shadow on his brain. Benn was at the end of the road. He admitted that himself. He came out of retirement after losing to Malinga for one last hurrah. He had to bet huge money on himself in order to get motivated. He quit the first time because he had an ankle injury. His ankle injury was the only reason there was a rematch. You’re an entertainer.
It was a fake injury. He held the wrong ankle when he pretended to fall!! Then we saw no swelling, with ice on the OTHER ankle to the one he was holding in pain (Lol!) The x-ray shadow on the brain is tissue damage and only effected his balance when missing or taking a step in. Collins was right in front of him so he didn't have to go searching and swinging, his punching technique and defensive movement looked better than ever - the eyes don't lie. The fights were both close and tight, with Benn MENTALLY fading and Collins remaining bull-like.
Collins, while not aesthetically pleasing, was an absolute, straight-up bulldog. Neither of the Dirrells would have been able to discourage or dissuade him, and in the end he would have ground both down.
Collins was such a metamorphisist. In those US title fights on network TV, he's a mover! The other guys are the aggressors and Collins is the boxer, using the ring, going side to side, very mobile. Totally the wrong tactics against McCallum. It was hilarious how the Petronelli's told him to 'do a Kalambay' on McCallum. He ignored their instructions after five rounds and brawled McCallum instead, with the last seven rounds being 50-50. Then he sacks off the Petronellis, holds his feet more. Against Kalambay he is pressure fighting but its intelligent pressure with sharp hands. When he fights on Eubank and Benn undercards in 93 on Matchroom, he is now a pure counter puncher! And a very good counter puncher at that it must be said. He is throwing neat combinations off the jab, and doing everything right. He didn't turn into total marauder until the second Chris fight. Ugly, ungamely, but damn effective because he maximized his extra strength at super middle after hiring nutritionists and S&C coaches (the first boxer to ever do either, I believe, incidentally).
If you were right, and he had to fake an injury in just the 4th round, then what does that say? A fighter is nothing without his balance and footwork. Everything comes from the feet. I can’t believe you’ve typed that. A fighter with balance issues is extremely vulnerable. Nobody is disputing Collins’ great strength. But he had a diminished version of Nigel Benn in front of him. He retired afterwards because his tank was empty. So I’ll ask you again: What is otherworldly about beating a guy who had a shadow on his brain, and who’d come out of retirement and had balance issues? You’re kidding yourself.
He beats Benn and Eubank when they are both prime, unfortunately hes seen in the UK as catching them past their best and not given credit, but yeah, he was legit. Hes a hard hard man on the street to, or use to be a few years back. He set upon a few Polish bouncers years ago in Dublin because they took the **** with him, left one bust up bad. Definitely a man you swallow your pride with if hes serious. Nice bloke though
I asked McCallum if he meant it about Collins being the roughest and toughest he fought, at an after dinner show he was at in 2002/3. It was a straight yes
Im a big fan of Benn, I see no problem with him waving the white flag in his last fight or 2 considering what he gave us, but im in no doubt that that injury was fake...
It was otherworldly to treat NIGEL BENN like a LITTLE BOY. Can you digest that? He wasn't a ****ing invalid, he looked incredible. Benn faked the injury (and stayed on his stool second time) because shots that would've crumbled anyone else had NO effect on Collins, it was ridiculous stuff.
Neither do I. But that means that Collins’ wins over him can’t be classed as incredible and otherworldly.
