Anthony Joshua flew to California yesterday. Apparently, Joshua went there to say he was turning down the Wilder fight and the LEGIT $50 million offer (because he didn't want to get cheated in the U.S.). While he's here, looks like he and Hearn are also going to announce Joshua is fighting Baby Miller in the U.S. (I guess he doesn't fear being cheated against Miller). And, to SHOWCASE the BIGGEST STAR IN BOXING ... they placed Anthony Joshua right next to the commentators for the NBA playoff game last night. The commentators were told to talk about Joshua's presence and hype the BIGGEST STAR IN BOXING. And the commentators didn't know what his name was. They knew who Wilder was. But they were confused about this ANTHONY JOHNSON guy. They thought Anthony Joshua's name was "Anthony Johnson." (LOL) We don't need Wilder. Joshua's the biggest star in the sport I tell you!!!! Sometimes, Joshua fans have to be reminded the United Kingdom is about the size of the state of Florida.
My 13 year old nephew knows who Joshua is, and he doesn't follow boxing at all. I think thats a pretty good indicator of how famous he is, in the UK at least.
Yeah, yet AJ fills 90,000 seats in his own country and yet Wilder cant fill the 19,000 seats in Barclay Centre in his own country. Sometimes Wilder fans need reminding even though our country is tiny compared to the US, Wilder still isn't on the same level as Joshua in terms of profile, money, fans.
Sometimes you have to remind Joshua fans this isn't 1918. To see a fight, you don't have to buy a ticket and go to the stadium. If 90,000 people watched a fight on TV, (not 90,000 homes, but 90,000 people, as in 90,000 ticket holders) it would be considered a total disaster. Who cares if you sell 90,000 tickets to a fight. It's nice aesthetically. The gate adds to the purse. But if it's what you're using to generate most of your income, you're screwed. The attendance for Holmes-Shavers II was like 3,000 in a ballroom in Caesar's Palace. But 70 MILLION people watched it on television. Nobody gave a damn about the gate. Mayweather-Pacquiao sold like 18,000 tickets, and most of those were comped by various hotels that just gave them to high rollers staying at their casinos. I think they only put 2,000 tickets ON SALE to the general public. But 5 million people spent $100 to watch it on PPV in the U.S. alone. The money doesn't come from "Ye Old Gate, Doc Kearns." Times have changed. Eddie Hearn knows that. He just signed a "streaming deal" in the U.S. for God's sake. He knows where the money is. Leaning on "live ticket sales" as an excuse to block a fight, when you've just signed a billion dollar streaming deal is nonsense.
AJ isn`t big in America but he`s bigger in Britain than Wilder is in America, get it? Wilder would get hometown advantage because he`s bigger in America than AJ it would vice versa in Britain, this other fighter is not a big name so isn`t important and wouldn`t be treated that way by judges or ref`s the way Wilder would, but if I was Wilder or AJ I wouldn`t fight in the other guy`s backyard and Wilder will not do that either, so I don`t get your point.
