I get the impression our American friends would be a lot happier if boxing regressed back to the domestic sport it was in the past. This thread has Lou DiBella levels of bitterness and insecurity. Funny stuff.
I think Joshua will never be a true sporting megastar in the same way Usain Bolt or Federer is because he isn’t authentic. You can see he’s been media trained to the extreme and he always comes across as wooden and uncharismatic. He’s done well for himself in terms of publicity considering, but I don’t think he’ll ever be remembered in the same way other sporting greats are because of this.
It's actually the opposite. The tired argument that the fight HAS to be in the UK because Joshua DRAWS LARGER LIVE gates there now was totally taken off the table by JOSHUA's OWN PROMOTER when Eddie Hearn signed a BILLION DOLLAR "streaming" agreement. The live gates aren't worth a BILLION dollars. You currently make the most money selling fights to the U.S. fans. If you don't, Joshua has peaked. And as far as the majority of sports fans in the U.S. are concerned, Joshua is "Tony Johnson, that guy who turned down $50 million to fight Deontay Wilder."
If you're arguing the "gate," you're the simpleton. Eddie Hearn didn't just sign a billion dollar deal with the largest stadiums around the world so people around the world can "see" Joshua fight. He signed a BILLION DOLLAR STREAMING deal. The live gate argument is over. Ticket sales arguments are over. You can't make a billion dollars off live gates in the UK in a couple years. With that deal, Hearn has shown it's about selling programming to the widest audience possible. You stage them where you can market it and make the most money. But this gate nonsense has to stop. Hearn blew his own argument by signing that deal. If it's a toss-up about where the Joshua-Wilder fight makes the most money, in the US or the UK, and the gate is the deciding factor, fine. The gate should be the "additional" income. It's not where the bulk of the income should be generated. And Joshua saying yesterday he's willing to take "A PAY CUT" to stage the fight in the UK shows the gate doesn't push the UK aspect over the top. Quite the opposite. It shows they can make MORE fighting in the US., but he doesn't want to.
I think Joshua is used to traveling around the UK and he towers over everyone, and he gets mobbed everywhere he goes, or he travels to boxing shows where people recognize him. Then he went to California to attend a basketball game to get more exposure, and he walked into an arena where basically every athlete in the building was bigger than him, and just about all of them make more than him, and the announcers who were told to hype him didn't even know his name. And maybe reality punched him in the face, and he'll realize he isn't the major star he thought he was and maybe he needs to be more agreeable. Or maybe he'll just go home and decided to remain a big fish in a pretty small pond.
The truth is that boxing isn't a major sport in the us so it's unsurprising they wouldn't know him. I remember when Wilder walked around New York and nobody knew who he was. He could do the same today and people still wouldn't know. If Joshua walks anywhere in the UK he would be instantly recognisable.
I don't know who this Anthony Joshua fellow is, but that Tony Johnson fella I saw last night on tv could probably give our beloved world champ Deontay Wilder a pretty decent fight.
The gate still matters. Eddie Hearn isn't going to want to run shows in empty arenas regardless of his tv money.
@Dubblechin - Ultimately the fight will be held wherever global boxing tsar and big time shot-caller Mr. Edward Hearn deems fit. If uncle Al plays his cards right and falls into line Eddie may find a cushy salaried position within Matchroom USA. Relax…the fight will happen soon.
Well Joshua is a multi-millionaire and multi belt holder after only a few years as a pro. I really doubt he cares that some netball (sorry basketball - basically same thing, a sport to put a ball through a little hoop) commentators don't know his name. I really bet he's all choked up about it.
I hope he’s not going to attent washington vs tampa hockey game today, because there’s even less chance they’ll know who he is , so they may even call him usain bolt.
More people in the world know who those comentators (reggie miller) are , than who Joshua is . Also most basketball players make more money than Joshua.
