“This is the first time in my career I’d say we are specifically working on a game plan,” Joshua said during a speaking engagement with the Oxford Union. “I’ve based a lot of my success on raw ability, but the raw ability wasn’t enough, so now I’m going to try out this game plan training and see how it goes. I plan to go back to the basics and take this guy out.”

''And Joshua has admitted that he got his strategy completely wrong the first time – but has vowed to rectify his mistakes after confirming that his assistant coach Angel Fernandez has been promoted in a change to his training camp.

Speaking at the Oxford Union, he said: “The fight with Usyk, in my mind, was going for 12 rounds.

“That was my game plan because I thought I could compete with him as a boxer.

“And I think he won two more rounds than I did. That’s how he became champion.

“So the goal now is to go back to basics and go for the knockout.

A day or two before the first fight

Joshua predicts a ‘Kronk style’ knockout of Oleksandr Usyk

Joshua and Usyk collide tomorrow in a heavyweight title fight.

“I know what I’m doing. I know exactly what I’m doing. I know what I’m gonna do. I know...Knockout, Kronk style. When I watch things, I like Emanuel Stewart’s mindset. Obviously you’ve got to do your As and Bs and Cs but is you follow them they’ll lead to you to KO — and that’s what we’re here to do, put on a spectacular show, people want to see knockouts and that’s what we’ve got to deliver for the fans.”

He comes across as quite thick doesn’t he. He’s never had a game plan before but his game plan was to compete with him as a boxer. Hope Usyk wins again.

Such a braindead thing for him to say:

He's either a pro boxer who has never gone into a fight with a plan, which makes me wonder what he pays his team for. It's also plainly untrue, see his obvious game-plans against Parker, Ruiz, and USYK. Obviously he had a plan for all his other pro fights as well, but at least with the others he could plausibly argue that he was just fighting his natural game.

Or, he's lying and just trying to cope/convince himself and Usyk that this time he should be worried, but I suspect Usyk and his team will see right through it.

Has there ever been, in the history of elite boxing, a more pathetic weakmind than AJ?

Was there not a gameplan in place for the Ruiz rematch then?

If he catches him cold anything can happen but Usyk will be expecting a more aggressive Joshua. Actually a hard one to predict as you'd think Joshua can't be as bad again but he was almost stopped at the death. It wasn't that close a fight.

Might as well say, ‘I’ve never actually trained for a fight before. This time I’m going to give it a try and see what happens.’

Whatever makes the defeat rest easier with him, I guess.

He will need all the help he can get as Usyk absolutely battered him last time - it wasn't close, certainly not as close as AJ is alluding to.

I see a closer fight this time around, maybe more competitive but Usyk just has more skill and it will be the deciding factor again.

AJ’s figuring this boxing thing out.

Win more rounds than the champion and you win the decision and then you become the champ.

To be fair that in itself is a novel concept these days. It is always a pleasant surprise when a challenger outpoints a champion and is allowed to leave with the belts.

It bucks hundreds of years of tradition. People should have more respect for the tried-and-true methods that have withstood the tests of time.
