****, I forgot that's only 2 years away, I'll be heading up for that Gold in the coms then turn pro for Joshua imo
What kind of dough are the gb boxers on? Think i remember bellew quite a few years ago saying either he or someone else was getting 2 grand a month tax free with loads of other perks so i reckon someone like josh would be seeing well over a 100k a year just for staying am if include sponsorships.
I agree he should stay amateur. He really impressed me in the early part of the first round against Cammarelle. He circled the southpaw by moving to the right very nicely indeed, but then got sucked in and lost his range. He has a lot to learn, and his decision is very wise indeed. I can see him getting some good pros wanting him for sparring, he'll learn there too. Good lad, proud of him.
Good point. How would it look if he lost closely in the worlds to the same guy who beat him last time(in my opinion wrongly) If he leaves it 4 more years he could win gold again(or not}but as a pro he could be European champion and be in the world top 10,knocking on the door at 26 or 27.I dont think the early opposition would be very different in either case. Hes going to be a force to be reckoned with, but even as a heavyweight could leave it too late.Think possibly this happened to audley as a pro. Wonder how many (if any)offers hes had?
He says that now but it might be a different matter once the offers come in. If he turns them down and decides to stay amateur, then it's a very mature move on his part.
I'd like to see him turn pro, and be moved slower then what the media/fans will expect, send him to Germany and America for sparring. But I can see the reasons for staying amateur, the lad is very raw.
He turned down £50,000 in 2010 to turn pro after winning his first ABA title, saying he's not in boxing for money. Saying that, 50,000 is peanuts compared to what Frank and Eddie will be offering.
What, like all the 2008 olympians then? I don't see the point in that, he can get great aparring as an amateur as well
Khan said he was thinking about staying for Beijing and going for gold after winning his medal but give it a few months and lets see where he stands and where all the Olympians stand. You have to remember he will start seeing some of his mates go pro now from that team.
Working out well for all of them 4 years down the road isn't it? Spending years fighting no marks from Eastern Europe or taking on the best Amateurs around the world- tough decisiontat. There's a reason why the likes of Rigondeaux/Shumenov were able to take World title fights so early on in their career.
They've all been promoted poorly.. Degale- Hasn't lived up to the hype, Promoter issues. Gavin- Not dedicated. Billy Joe- Should have more fights under his belt, but thats Franks fault, he's still progressing nicely though. Price- Promoted shockingly by Maloney, spent 3 years fighting pregnant Latvians. Signing with Matchroom is the logical option for the Olympians that want to turn pro, regular fights and you'll actually be promoted in your hometown.
I don't think the expectations on him will be enormous if he turns pro. Unlike Fraudley he doesn't seem the brash self-publicising type but a humble young man. Took Price what, four years to get a title shot? The aim should be fight six or so times a year and get the British belt before someone else becomes the Golden Boy in Rio. Three years to learn the trade on undercards and build your profile is surely better than hanging round for the Commonwealths. If he is managed correctly, gets a decent signing on fee and sponsorships and invests his money well then within a year he could have set up a brilliant financial base for the rest of his life. He'd be crazy not to take that option given no-one knows what is round the corner in life.
