I have heard a lot of times as everyone else probably has this theory that AJ is somehow manufactured and media trained. I don't mean this to be a bash AJ thread because I am actually big supporter of AJ and proud he is british. BUT I have to be honest when he is being interviewed i feel like he tries too hard to say some slick **** and say something really introspective and convoluted. often he wont even answer the question or will go round the housing searching for a perfect answer. Has anyone else picked up on this? If he has been media trained he should probably get his money back.
I disagree, They have built him to one of the most marketable biggest cash cows in recent years. He's making a fortune from sponsors alone, One guy said he saw giant picture of him on the side of a sky scrapper in some foreign country. Boxing is a business and AJ and his team are absolutely killing it. Media training is no different than the different accent most people put on when they answer the phone or serve customers in retail, or car salesmen etc. What ever they are doing is clearly working better than any other heavyweight right now and in recent year's.
Yeah, completely and that's all true. But i dont think thats all media training i think his marketability is Him, he is clearly a decent guy, he looks good he speaks clearly and doesn't have any outlandish views that go against the grain... or if he does he is smart enough to keep them to himself. He is marketable in his own right and he and his team are doing a great job of monetising that. What i am talking about is in interviews i just think he overdoes it, when answering even basic questions they just come off at times too much
What’s this I heard on this forum not so long ago that he was caught drug dealing a few years back? Is it true because I didn’t see the media ever mention it but from one of the posters here and I know there are as many Joshua haters as devoted followers here?
Yeah, it true and well publicised I would say. Its part of his story... Boy done good after finding boxing. How Boxing helped turn his life around and stopped him going down the wrong path... and rightfully so.
Not to me, he doesn't. I like the way he comes across. Humble, but not too humble, considerate and genuine. I like the way he answers questions - he really considers the question and gives a thoughtful answer. No complaints from me. But out of curiosity, could you name some fighters whose mic/interview skills you really admire?
Hahah well... maybe its just me then. Ill go with Andy Lee... he is generally clear, concise and to the point.
If he's been media trained then he was media trained as an amateur before the Olympics because he talks pretty much the same way before he became the cash cow he is. I do think he tries too hard to sell the humble down to earth persona. He knows this is what British fans connect with. Just like Hatton and Bruno before him, the down to earth guy you could have a drink in the pub with is the persona British sports fans tend to connect with.
Almost every big public persona gets media training nowadays, and that's not just to prevent them from acting like baffoons but also not to run their mouths and act like a decent (and hopefully likable) human being. It's the ones that still act like baffoons or say things they shouldn't have that forgo media training, or are too stupid or self-involved to behave the way they get thought. Nothing wrong with it... nobody cares for guys that keeps insulting people or keeps screaming the same stupid things whenever they're near a camera.
I work as a paraplanner dealing with clients with too much money and if I were to behave, act or talk like I would normally outside office hours I would be unemployed. What Joshua does is no different like you said. If someone told me speak like this, portray that when on camera/in public eye and you will triple/quadruple your income especially the amounts were talking about with AJ then its a no brainer.
id also say Paulie M, its good when he is comentating with someone who hasnt boxed as he tends to add technical knowledge that would normally go unnoticed. I also think (and this is a one off) that Tony Bellew called the AJ-Klit fight down to a T when it was happening. He literally predicted what was gonna happen in the next round 3 times during the fight. And to be fair he also told everyone exactly what was gonna happen in regards to the first Haye fight. One other guy that comes to mind who i think would be good on the mic with a bit of training when he is done could be George Groves. He seems to call fights pretty well, doesnt really carry an agenda either
I doubt media training had anything to do with it. Seems to me that it's just him using his own common sense and judgement. I think out of politeness he puts some effort into his answers instead of just keeping them too short. I also think he is obviously aware that his family could be watching, kids could be watching etc so he behaves accordingly like any other normal decent person would
Can you blame Joshua. I'm sure Hearn and Joshua's handlers have him follow a strict script, since it isn't very hard to your rub sponsers the wrong way, which Joshua seems to have a lot of. Joshua holding his tongue and having a manufactured public personality is a small price to pay if it results in Joshua receiving a fortune. Mike Tyson's team tried to do the same when he was younger, but unlike Joshua Tyson wasn't the best at following rules and screwed up his image. Tyson was lucky that he naturally had charisma and still made a fortune, but imagine if he maintained his clean image and original team. Tyson could've easily made much more.
