The sad thing is many of those who were presumptuously arguing with every fibre of their body that AJ would be “far too much for Ali to handle” will now insist he is utter crap. And always was.

AJ was a tremendous champion of this age. No shame in losing to a guy with the perfect tactics.

¿Que Ali? Honestly, I don’t see any version of Ali minus the post Frazier III years that Joshua could beat. Whatever the Doug Joneses and Fraziers and Nortons had that gave Ali a tough time...Joshua doesn’t have. I don’t see Joshua troubling prime Ali at all whatsoever.

    Prime Ali - KO 9
Still good Ali - KO 11

*late rounds picks are due to Joshua’s size, and nothing else.

In a few years time , when the dust has settled on AJ s career ,THEN we'll know just how good / bad he really is /was. It's obvious now he's never going to be another Holyfield /Lewis /Holmes /Louis etc but he may yet prove he's no Dokes /Thomas/Tucker /Witherspoon etc .
Thing is , even now , after the potential career destroying loss to Ruiz ,we still don't know how it'll pan out .
Holyfield was deemed finished after Bowe 1 , Lewis after McCall , Louis after Max , and Foreman after Ali , but no one can predict how things may change . Let's review in say ..5 years ?

    Agreed.

Sometimes I really don’t think there is so much difference between the eras. People really try to believe being great in one era might only relate to being “half decent” in another. I don’t think that’s ever been true.

Sure a champ from another era might beat a champ from another time in an actual fight, but any champ Is still at least “world class” for all time. That’s the worst he can be. And therefore always worthy of a chance as any other world class fighter.

What really differentiates between champions is not being from stronger eras, because on a one to one basis everyone has a chance, but having a stronger resume by beating better or winning more often against more of the top men of his day.

Ali was always better than AJ because he beat a lot more opponents that were top level. We didn’t need to see AJ lose to Ruiz to know that.

But even if the Ruiz fight is conformation for those who did not understand this, then it is no conformation that AJ would not deserve to be in the same ring as Ali. He was a world champion himself, and most likely beats many of the opponents Ali beat.

If one has studied the sport (notice I didn't say watched) for more than 20-30 yrs it's easy too see the difference in ability from fighters from say the 1930's through the 1990's then from fighters of the last 10-15 yrs. Especially in the Heavy weight division.

I've studied the sport for about a year and a half, watched since about 6 months before that and I can see it's abundantly clear

Stopped reading this thread after encountering an interesting statement "Chisora is a much better fighter than Frazier".

I do not want to give away the name of the poster to spare him of further embarrassment.

Ali had mediocre power. See Norton Ali and Norton Fraizer vs Foreman Fraizer and Foreman Norton for the importance of punching power. Ali beating AJ could happen but Ruiz beating him isn’t proof of it.
