This is where the devil is in the detail.

I think that Wlad even then would have been too much for Carnera.

Povetkin had looked awful in the Price fight, and it was obvious that he was only going to get a sore head, and a last big payday against Joshua.

Yes Carnera would almost certainly have beaten that version of Povetkin.

As for Parker and Takam, how good were they ever?

Parker was a cheese champ and Takam seems to be overrated out of nowhere.

I still stand by that Carnera would've beaten that version of Wlad, who had major gas tank issues and was off to my eye

I almost feel as if Carnera is irrationally underrated on this forum (and everywhere). His resume is there for anyone, he was champ, but they only know him from his fight with Baer, Louis and a few scandals

I say this but I don't even rank him in the top 3 heavies of his era (tbf the late 30s was stacked)

Being ko'd by all the punchers he faced that were not wearing handcuffs.
Being floored by light punching Sharkey and Stribling.
Being ko'd twice by journeyman Leroy Haynes.

I wouldn't make Carnera more than50/50 against Abe Simon and Buddy Baer ,in fact I'd pick Buddy to beat him!

I cannot believe that anyone thinks Primo was legitimate enough to make a thread about especially against AJ....has anyone looked at AJ's competition...he has nearly cleaned out the division in 20 fights

I think that you would be on fairly safe ground saying that he was better than these men, regardless of whether he beats them.

    Not necisarily.

If fighter A beats fighter B, then you still look at the rest of their records.

If B has a deep resume, and the only thing of note on As resume is beating B, then you would say that B had an off night or, A just had the right style.

Anyone have to pay/ threaten their opponents to lay down?

Truthfully, it was rife in that era.

I wouldn't bet a second had spit bucket, that Baer or Simon were not involved in such a fight at some point.

Carnera has a long list of such opponents, lets not pretend his career and theirs are in any way comparable as far as legitimacy is concerned.

I think that even if you give the accusers the benefit of the doubt in every case, Carnera still emerges with a better resume than Baer Jr or Simon.

I do not think that this possibility merits any serious consideration, but even if I believed it to be the case, I would still rank Carnera higher than Buddy Baer and Abe Simon.

It's not like you need to win the title to be better than them.
