People who know Bute well know that his defensive is very good. Other people think that his right hand is too low. He's a southpaw, and against an orthodox boxer, the jab is not that relevant (look at Calzaghe-Kessler, the Danish could not land his jab of all night). Bute has a complete defense arsenal. He's never where you expect him to be, his chin is protected by his right shoulder. You can think Mundine is faster but he won't ever ko Bute.
Mundine has never fought a southpaw. Who knows how he'd handle it. I think overly defensivley and if Bute keeps consistent pressure on Mundine he will wilt. He has impressive skills - But he's a bully who likes to be the stronger guy and that's why he fights these crappy also rans - So he can be the bully. Siaca and Kessler with some will power easily defeated him. Green failed because he fought a STUPID fight and waited for Choc - Which is just insane against a fighter of Mundine's speed. As soon as Mundine realised he only had to counter the odd single shot he walked away with the fight. Echols just couldn't cut the ring off and was outboxed. Mundine has the ability - but not the heart, the thirst for battle.
Mundie is a total f*ckwit, who is currently content fighting bums. That said, he is probably the most under rated fighter on this forum. Here are some facts for the idiots who will come on here without knowing jack sh*t about him or his career. 1. He had NO amatuer career. 2. He fought the reigning champ Ottke in only his 11th pro fight. UNHEARD OF. 3. He has been a fighter who has constatnly improved in the ring. The kessler fight showed it, The Green fight even more so, and when he DEMOLISHED Sam Soliman it was probably one of the most impressive performances i have seen in recent times. If you have not seen either the Green of Soliman fight then you really have no place commenting in this thread. Mundine is one of the BEST defensive fighters in boxing. p4p top 10 defensively. Mundine is also one of the QUICKEST fighters in boxing. p4p top 5. Offensively he is sometimes lacking however. His BIGGEST weakness is his MENTALITY, as he is very much a confidence fighter. Against Kessler HE FOUGHT SCARED. Since then, knowing his chin is not suspect as it first seemed, he has been very strong all round.
Mundine is much more "talented" then Bute, and has the ability to win this fight. However, a few things that remain unknown, the biggest his ability against a southpaw, as he has never faced a top level or even b or c grade southpaw in his pro career. I personally would probably pick Mundine to pick up a UD, PROVIDED he actually comes in confident and willing to let his hands go. Mundine is very much like Zab Judah in that he has a wealth of talent at his disposal, that he appears very reluctant to use at times. Very unpredictable fighter.
I can think of two off the top of my head - Ricky Thornberry and Marc Bargero. Not big names, granted, but it was early in Mundine's career, Bargero was Australian champ, and Thornberry had taken Calzaghe and Ottke the distance.
Did you see the Thornberry fight? The Bagero fight? Both guys looked like they'd been KO'd once or twice in the dressing room before they came out...
Saw them both and I agree that neither looked great. Not saying they were great wins for Choc, just that he has fought a couple of southpaws.
Personally I think fighting a southpaw would actually SUIT Mundine. When fighting a southpaw, the fight tends to take place at boxing range, as often times it can be awkward getting in to close quarters. Mundine has a very good lead right hand, that he throws similar to PBF. His jab would also be effective in keeping Bute frustrated and disgusing his right hand lead or left hook.
My opinion was made with these bouts in mind. So your post doesn't change anything. I understand that he can progress more as a professionnal fighter, because he did not have an amateur career. But how can you say he's improving since Kessler? Danny Green? Come on, we're not talking of a top 10 boxer here. Sam Soliman? Same thing. Mundine looks very good against poor opposition.
Over the years i probably have read the General Forum more than the Aussie Forum. I hardly post in here though. Keep up the good work my Choc Apprentice :yep
I bet my life if it had been Danny Green Mundine fought on the night he faced Kessler then Green would have won. Its not about who he fought it has been about how he has fought since then. His whole style has been refined and the injection of confidence played a major role. His coming out fight was the loss to Kessler, he took alot out of that fight. He has talent to burn but i wish he would use it.
