Unfortunately for a pretty talented fighter who had a decent career, he will probably be most remembered for that comment about 9/11!

I like him, my cousin is one of his mates so I think he is a top bloke and looks after the people whose around him.
But the general view from the Aussie public will be that he is a jerk, talks too much trash, and super washed up after fighting his last few fights.
He won 2 World Titles and earned himself loads of money for someone of his skillset. He's done very well considering

That seems to be the common view, that in general life he's a good bloke. However nobody ever pointed a gun to his head and made him say the ****ed up **** he's said in public over the years. I think it's pretty hard to argue, that if he took up boxing at a younger age instead of playing rugby league, that he would have been a lot greater, in terms of legacy. Let's say, if Mundine goes straight into boxing, then he's no. 3 all time Aussie boxer. I know it's all hypothetical but there would be Fenech, Rose and then Mundine. I am not including Tszyu, if we include Tszyu, knock Mundine down one.
However Mundine in reality for me sits probably still around the 5 - 10 mark, all time Aussie's. Even with taking up boxing late, he did amazingly well but it's still a wasted career in terms of legacy. Right after his initial fight with Green, that was his moment but he wasted it. He's done well, had a long career, stayed extremely competitive, been KO'd, come back and won. He can certainly be proud of his boxing career but he could have been better. He certainly wouldn't want to lose to a guy who hasn't fought pro boxing in 16 years though in his last fight!

To be fair to his trash talking, I don't think he'd earn the amount of money he did if he didn't talk like that, he brought arrogance with him, and it works well in boxing. Yeah he's in the same mark for me, and as you said, that is really good for someone who started late and dedidated himself to rugby league. He walked away with a Title at the end of the day, ain't no easy feat, so proud that another Aboriginal man got one.

Pretty average as a boxer, no real amazing wins, only some decent ones. Definitely nothing special I guess unless you count that he transitioned over from rugby.

He has had a good career that could've been much better, too much weight yo yoing he should've stayed at 168 & 160 no lower. I do believe he would have been an elite fighter had he started boxing earlier instead of playing Rugby League he had good natural speed, power and reflexes. He has some good domestic wins over Green, Geale, Soliman his win over Echols was considered an upset at the time he also gave Ottke and Kessler tougher fights than expected.

Yeah, so I was talking in terms of legacy as a fighter. So in terms of making money, it was a good decision to become a name in league before starting his boxing career. I am not convinced you have to be a loud mouth, big talker to bring in the dollars. Your talent will speak for itself, eventually.

I believe he was a good fighter, his bloodlines suggest that as well as his skill. The other Mundine, Tony was a world class fighter as well.

His dad was better and would have been a world champion in most other eras, but Mundine junior is still an outstanding athlete who had a respectable career that could have been so much more if he had pursued boxing full time earlier instead of rugby league for almost 10 years.
He's said a lot of dumb things and made some bad decisions like not heading over to the states sooner to at least get better sparring and advice instead of his dad and big entourage of yes men and almost cemented himself early on if not for his glass chin against Ottke.
Ultimately he was happy to rake in a ton of money from PPV fighting at home, with a gullible australian public paying to watch all of his fights, most being mismatches against a lot of mediocre and or past it former champions

He was really good from 03 to 07. Would have been better if he stayed at 168 and tried to get fights with Calzaghe, Ward and Froch. Wouldn't pick him to win but would have been more interesting.

When you look at his sporting background, the age he started boxing, coming from a different sport, every fight on ppv in Australia, beat some solid/decent level fighters, won a trinket belt, then I would say he massively overachieved. Honestly he did really well, who knows how good he may have been if he just concentrated on boxing from a young age and didn't play other sports ? Was clearly at his best early in his career at 168. Should have never changed weights.
