I very much doubt this was a publicity stunt. He obviously holds his commitment to Islam over a above his boxing career and finiancial gain - not every boxing would have the balls to take such a stand against something they felt so strongly about - as Icemax said it was commercial suicide to be so open about his views whilst still an active fighter.
soliders returning from the combat which he disagrees with are the public face of Britains foreign policy - they are an obvious target for protestors. Its obviously a high risk manouvre.
This is true, but unfortunately the general public can't get up Downing St to protest outside number 10 or the Foreign Office where the real villains of the piece reside. On a seperate note, I'm not a fan of parades, homecoming or otherwise, its something that we have copied from the Yanks and stinks of jingoism. Fair enough, have a victory parade after a war is won but this hasn't been, and probably never will be. The publics mind is currently on the welfare of "our boys" (I hate that term) but when this fiasco is over and the armed forces drift out of the news it will no doubt get back to Tommy Atkins again. http://faxmentis.org/html/kipling.html
I haven't got a problem with politicians making a decision to go to war so long as that decision is made solely on the basis of what is best for the people in this country and their well being. This attitude should permiate all the way down the chain of command from PM to the lowliest Lance Jack unfortunately the decisions to go to war in Iraq and Afghanistan were not made on this basis. Our standing abroad has gone through the floor, we have created a divided nation in this country, and we are much more at risk of being attacked by domestic and foreign terrorists than we were before 2001. The whole situation stinks and those responsible (not the common soldier) should hang their ****ing heads in shame.
I actually think that he is probably more intelligent and has a higher level of connsciousness than most boxers to be honest. Because his opinions are unpopular doesnt make him an idiot in my book!
I agree with most of that, for every actions there is an equal and opposite reaction and all that. But the "common solider" cannot absolve themselves of their actions because "they were carrying out orders". There is no act of conscription in force in the UK and all of those soliders choose of their free will to join the Army and accept payment for their services.
Small waving that black flag is bad news to be honest, its the flag of the jihad....he isn't just expressing an opinion, thats something a lot more hardcore.
