Rather than just watching fights randomly, I'm starting to watch as much as I have of a particular fighter I've not watched much. First on the list, Antonio Avelar. I watched Avelar vs: Miguel Canto Alfonso Lopez Rocky Mijares Shoji Oguma Tae Shik Kim Prudencio Cardona Wilfredo Vasquez Miguel Lora The guys who could move on Avelar, give him angles, and make him reset (Canto, Lora), had a huge adavantage. It wasn't advisable to stand and trade with Avelar. I found his stoppages of Vasquez and the always game Oguma to be pretty impressive. Cardona seemed to catch him cold and got him out of there quick, and was the only guy on the list who stood in front of ad traded with Avelar successfully. I do not have Avelar-Roman I & II. Anyone know why Roman was DQ'd in the first one? I'd assume the second one was a Canto-esque type performance but Roman had more pop and got Avelar out. Avelar reminds me of bit of Frankie Duarte with maybe a bigger punch. Very well worth the watch. I'd welcome any addtional insight. Here is Avelar - Vasquez. Helluva fight and the 5th round is one of the best I've seen: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNxfiuRzN_c[/ame]
Avelar was one of the biggest punchers ever in those lower divisions(Flyweight and super fly) he could punch with the best of them, i would also advice that Avelar-Vazquez to those who havent seen it, tremendous fight with a tremendous round(5th).
I'd say for all round skillset he looks an unskilled plodded in the Margarito mould compared to another Mexican lower weight powerhouse German Torres. Natonic hit the spot with his OP IMO; **** with Avelar and you'll get hurt. Oguma was usually a patient fighter who built to a peak and he obviously felt he had Avelar's number. He was also very durable and as seasoned as any lineal flyweight champion before or after. Avelar nearly ripped his head off. Avelar was pretty basic skillswise. But he could pressure if you stood in front of him too long (and don't get trapped in the corner if you're a midget like Lopez) and he could slug it out if you indulged him. A good fighter mainly due to size, power and gameness. I could see him banging out Arce more often than not. A level above Margarito for sure. He'd batter Segura, Hernan Marquez and would get the better of Concepcion in a shootout IMO, Cardona put it all together in a way Luis never has. Whilst he was an erratic performer and sometimes lackadaisical, Lopez was more skilled than Calderon IMO. Whether you dispute that or not, while you'd think Calderon's evasive nature and greater handspeed would see him outmoves Avelar but while Avelar is less awkward and more straight up than Cazares, I can't see Calderon surviving him at all. Amado Ursua was another midget Mexican who could bang. He seemed more of a boxer type who could counter punch and happened to possess a monster dig. Avelar and Torres' principle aim was to somehow turn you into mush. Tae-Shik Kim BTW was a very talented swarmer, who looks the spitting image of Michael Katsidis to me, styleswise of course. He stepped to Avelar and ended up looking like a drunk stumbling through town at 05:30 on a Saturday morning in a split second. Nice to see Avelar get some airtime, not 'great' and not what I'd call a H2H monster, but a humongous puncher and a very scary dude.
poor Lopez The small tractor could never quite get back into things after those loses to Guty Espadas.
Need to get into some Avelar fights myself. Will try to watch any available suggestions as long as the footage isn't too grainy. Will try to see Lopez, Canto, Lora, Mijares, Kim, Cardona, Vasquez, and Roman fights. Not sure when I will accomplish this as I'm still studying Olivares for a bit but after a couple more fights I'm on to Pedroza. Great analysis. Better ish than anything now on General by far.
By all means watch Avelar-Vasquez. Great fight and the 5th round is unreal. The Canto fight is a great watch too, but that's a showcase for Canto.
Watch Tae-Shik Kim fight. Less than two rounds, very exciting, two top fighters and a destructive ending.
Ive never seen Avear in a bad fight, never really studied him in great detail though. I really like his fight with Canto, Canto wants a fight there IMO
