Agreed. It's almost criminal how underrated Cervantes is. This would be a more one sided version of Tszyu-Philips.
Yep, Cervantes for me. I think he was just better all-round than Tszyu. He could also easily be considered the greatest junior welterweight ever. He’s no worse than top 3 for me and an absolute lock for top 5.
The Tszyu of Ben Tackie certainly had a chance but Ben Tackie isnt Kid Pambele..at first I thought Kostya style wins it but reading all these comments made me realize you are all right, Cervantes takes Tszyu.
I don’t see Cervantes stopping Tszyu like some here do, but I think it’s a 10-5 or 11-4 decision by a comfortable margin, and I don’t think he has any real scary moments — Kostya hits hard and will land a few single shots here or there but nothing to trouble Pambele. Just a different class and a bad matchup for Tszyu because Cervantes is going to dictate terms.
Kostya by KO. Cervantes didn't have the smoke to keep Kostya off him. Kostya had one slip up during his prime. One. In a fight he was very competitive in. There weren't a lot of wholes in his game that he couldn't cover with his power and body attack.
Seamus, I think you need to look a little closer. Kostya had a gaping hole in his game. I saw it during his fight with Vince Phillips. Phillips had absolutely no problem catching him with an overhand right. Over and over and no correction from the Tszyu camp and that ultimately proved his demise in that bout. OK, move on and correct the flaw. But he didn't. Fast forward 6 years later and he's fighting Jesse James Leija. Although Kostya won this bout, I noted while scoring it that the regularity he was being caught with the overhand or lead right proved nothing was corrected and he simply had a porous opening to anyone who saw it. What was more amazing was how he had such a long amateur career as well and there was no defense for this punch. I can tell you one thing, it wouldn't go unnoticed by Cervantes, That was one of the sharpest and fastest lead, overhand and counter right that you'd want to see. I'm now feeling that I was being very generous by picking Cervantes by decision, especially when Cervantes would start homing in on Tszyu's deficit. But I'll stick with the distance prediction.
