I pick Cervantes. cuevas never jabbed he just telegraphed those mean( I have to admit that) hooks. he certainly had the power to ko any welter but I think A.C with his long reach, good jab, experience I have to go with him .D

I will tentatively go with Cervantes also. Tentatively I say because as duo so succinctly put it, only one bomb by Cuevas would be enough to equalize everything. Kid Pambele, in my estimation, could turn the trick only by fighting the most conservative, careful performance that he was capable of...and forsaking any temptation to clock Pipino in event of a wild miss by the Mexican. In other words, try to emulate Randy Shields (a guy who I have the utmost respect for) in boxing his man and staying focused all the way.

Did Cervantes ever beat a full-fledged welterweight? I think Cuevas would be too strong for him. As I don't think Pipino would have any fear of Cervantes' punching power, I can see him wading in with his hooking attack and eventually catching him, probably by the 10th.

Cervantes was huge at 140.I doubt fighting at Welter would have been any problem for him in his prime, certainly not strength or punching power wise.

His average speed and not overly mobile style might be what costs him though, if it turns out he doesn't hit hard enough to wear Pipino down and get his respect.still, i'd expect to see Pipino stuck out on the end of his jab for much of the fight if he can't do serious damage to Antonio early.

Cervantes was more talented and expereinced. However he never fought at 147. I think Cervantes would get the lead early, outboxing a stalking Cuevas. However, as the fight progresses Cervantes will find it harder to keep holding the stronger Cuevas off him. I think as Cervantes slows Cuevas would land more and wear Cervantes down. I think Cuevas outworks him late and takes the decision.

Cervantes, he would have been coming up in weight but Duran came up higher in weight and kicked the **** out Cueves and Duran wanted nothing to do with Cervantes. Cervantes was a bad man.

I think the Cuevas who beat Clyde Gray, would mow Cervantes.

That Duran defeat of Cuevas happened a over two years after Cuevas lost the title. He had lost to mediocre Roger Stafford in the interim. That was nowhere near prime Cuevas. Cuevas made Duran look great that night. That said, Prime Duran would still beat prime Cuevas but not that easy.

And prime Duran still wanted nothing to do with Cervantes. Cervantes was a bad ass who could box and punch and wouldnt be fazed or intimidated by Cuevas, nor would he be stupid enough to get blitzed by him.

I don't think Duran was scared to fight Cervantes. Cervantes lost to 17 yr. old Benitez when Duran was still at 135 lbs. Then Duran skipped 140 lbs. to go after big money at 147 lbs. Are you really saying that Duran ducked Cervantes. I don't buy it. By the time Duran left lightweight, Cervantes was defending his reaquired WBA title against safe competition and being taken the distance.

CowarDuran handpicked Robbie Sims, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Iran Barkley , Jorge Castro*2, Jose Cuevas, Ray Leonard*3, Carlos Palomino, Wilfredo Benitez, Hectror Camacho*2, Vincenzo Pazienza*2, Esteban DeJesus*3, Saoul Mamby, Edwin Viruet*2, Adolfo Viruet and William Joppy rather than just get in the same ring with Antonio Cervantes.

Such a bad man was Cervantes.

did Pryor need a jab for Cervantes?

you dont need to rely heavily on the jab when you can break bones like Cuevas. Pipino would give a terrified Cervantes no rest and do to him what he did to Espada, Gray, Ranzany, and all of the rest - a knockout no later than four

It was well known that Teddy Brenner tried hard to match Duran with Cervantes and Duran's people wanted none of it. Period. And yes Cervantes lost to Benitez, who was a prodigy, the same Benitez who made beating Duran look easy when he was already past his prime and suffering severe brain damage.
