Great action in this bout between two underrated Featherweights. Gomez was a slick, crafty boxer-puncher who could bang, and held wins over the likes of young Esteban Dejesus (first to beat him), young Antonio Cervantes, and a KO win over an over the hill Dwight Hawkins to go along with this impressive win over Saijo, who himself was a very underrated, entertaining fighter. Tall and lanky but packing a good punch and a fearless style when in attack mode, he shows his resilience in this fight when floored early, only to come back firing and hurt Gomez in return. Good stuff :good Gomez looks a tough cookie. Interesting that he has wins over Dejesus and Cervantes. Does anyone know how those fights played out? They occurred in Gomez's backyard, so I wonder if the decisions were legitimate...
I understand that Gomez put the pressure on and beat up a young Cervantes in close, according to what I've heard anyway. He also faced Ernesto Marcel twice toward the end of his career, losing a close MD in the first fight only to be stopped in the rematch.
Gomez is another great featherweight technician from that late-60s early 70s period along with Winstone, famechon, Legra and so on.
