Great action in this bout between two underrated Featherweights. Gomez was a slick, crafty boxer-puncher who could bang, and held wins over the likes of young Esteban Dejesus (first to beat him), young Antonio Cervantes, and a KO win over an over the hill Dwight Hawkins to go along with this impressive win over Saijo, who himself was a very underrated, entertaining fighter. Tall and lanky but packing a good punch and a fearless style when in attack mode, he shows his resilience in this fight when floored early, only to come back firing and hurt Gomez in return. Entertaining stuff, just trying to bring to light two under-mentioned fighters.

    Good stuff :good

    Gomez looks a tough cookie.

Interesting that he has wins over Dejesus and Cervantes. Does anyone know how those fights played out? They occurred in Gomez's backyard, so I wonder if the decisions were legitimate...

I understand that Gomez put the pressure on and beat up a young Cervantes in close, according to what I've heard anyway. He also faced Ernesto Marcel twice toward the end of his career, losing a close MD in the first fight only to be stopped in the rematch.

Gomez is another great featherweight technician from that late-60s early 70s period along with Winstone, famechon, Legra and so on.

A Google search for "Orange County Boxing trainer Tony Gomez",
    re-directed and returned this.

I knew of Tony in 1979. What he told about a week and half ago, makes me
suspect the above may not be him? Carlos Palomino, Cubanito and Tommy's
    trainer that is?

I'm Looking for Tommy to see if he wants to go up this.

Tony said Irleis is back in Georgia, though he thinks Tommy is still local.
