We had the exact same score, to the T. The pair of hard right hands from Margarito stole a close tenth on my card as well. He really amped it up in the tenth and eleventh, and for all the talk of his monstrous offense - and it was monsterous - Williams defence and chin deserve lots of credit. Williams didn't keep his hands up for any extended period, but managed to make Tony miss dozens of shots in that eleventh, most while hurt. He also walked into a couple, but he took them very well.

This is the earliest Williams I'd ever seen before, so I'd pretty much only seen the supposedly regressed, pressure fighter. I was no expecting a performance like this. He did have a brilliant gameplan for Margo, and he's probably the only welterweight in history who could implement it. He just kept him occupied, flicked the jab wherever he could land it and then got out of the way. He just looked so gangly and unorganized as he did it, it's a wonder he managed to pull it off IMO. Very good fighter.

Margarito was more than just a sloppy brawler. He was deceptively hard to hit, set up his shots well and had that innate knowledge of what he could and couldn't land. Very good knowledge of distance, if not the best dictator of it. Throw in a cast iron chin, decent power, ridiculous physicality and a ****** workrate, and you have a very difficult fighter.

Yeah that was my score for the fight. Wasnt too much of a margarito fan pre cotto tbh, and i was very high on the Punisher going into this fight so i picked him to win. I thought pwill would have the ability and toughness to outlast Margarito and i was proved right. It was a great fight.

Pwill vs Martinez 1 would be another standalone fight to score CST.

I remember back in the day of using WHS tapes to record fights I had this whole card I think it was a tripleheader on HBO, HBO after dark had a few cards with guys like Cintron and Alfonso Gomez building profiles toward fighting each other

I was really high on Williams after the Sharmba Mitchell fight and had watched all of his HBO fights leading up to Margarito. I thought Williams won this fight going away and Margarito got beat from start to finish. The loss to Quintana was a total shock but it sort of foreshadowed what would happen against Sergio Martinez.

I don't know if @George Crowcroft or @CST80 were on the forum when it was happening but there was a fairly strong contingent of fans who thought Paul Williams was destined to dethrone Kelly Pavlik right around the time the wheels were coming off that bus. That was always an interesting fantasy fight to think about with two tall guys with high work rates who could take a shot

I'm fairly certain 2007/2008 I was struggling with basic maths and was about 4 years old.

Man Pavlik vs Williams would have been a hell of a fight. One of my top fights that never happened.

That would have been a great fight but I keep thinking about how Sergio KOED PW. I can’t help thinking what one of Kelly’s straight rights would have done to him. Hmm then you need to take into account how Sergio did against Kelly. Damn you’re right this would have been a great fight. I lean towards a KP stoppage however Paul didn’t mind mixing it up and while decent he wasn’t a defensive wizard. I think it would look like Williams/Martinez one till rounds 6 to 8 when Kelly ends it with a right down the middle…

Pretty close in size. But this video is good, shows Margarito pumping his jab, throwing combinations. The flo mos really exaggerate Tony as being super slow handed. Of course, they were as afraid of tony as joy was.

I remember this fight well, Margo was the bogeyman of the division and the thought of someone out landing him, out throwing him and standing up to his pressure was just unthinkable.

Unfortunately Williams then became an even bigger bogeyman across 3 divisions.

I was checking to see if someone said this and you beat me to it.

I'm not saying they both beat Floyd but they certainly had attributes that Floyd was carefull in avoiding throughout his career.

Floyd fans will say Marg was plodding but he was relentless with a great gas tank and could take a punch. In this fight Williams was just more effective all round I think I scored it 8-4 for Williams. Both men were avoided as they represented a tough day at the office.

I remember after Margarito v Cotto I, Oscar was hoping to fight the winner, which was expected to be Cotto. After Tony won, Oscar reneged and said something to the effect, "Paul W beat tony, maybe I'll fight him!"
Paul answered the call....Oscar went quiet
