One of the weirdest fights I've seen in some time. Keep your eyes peeled at the end of the fight for the commissioner, Jersey Joe Walcott, enraging the crowd and catching a bunch of heat for his role in the affair. The complete confusion among the ref, announcers, state commission and doctors is almost unprecedented, like this is some small hall fight with 75 people in attendance. Is it just me, or was ol' Jersey Joe front and center at plenty of controversies and oddities after his professional boxing career ended? This would fit in great to that recent thread about guys coming back from severe ass kickings to somehow grab the win... though it's a pretty unconventional way to go about it. Love the non-chalant announcers who seemingly don't care much about anything. "He's trying, that's the best you can say" or however exactly they refer to the performance of Alexander... Anyone remember either of these guys from back in the day? Pretty obscure fighters, not sure how much TV time either ever had but Nieves seemingly was not a bad fighter... just four months after this bout he would take a young, 4-4 Freddie Pendleton to a SD...
