Missed all the boxing this weekend, couldn't find a thread on this either. Smith got stopped by Lanardo Tyner? The hell? Anyone see it? What happened? He looked like a quality prospect.
He tried way too hard to slow Tyner down with body shots (never really getting past his defense and hurting him) and tuckered himself out. Then Tyner stopped being cute and started dishing out body punches himself. Smith can't take it as well as he can dish it out, and one particularly hard knock below the solar plexus did him away. He was also cut and puffed up on one eye from Tyner's jabs. I'm generally against using the term "exposed", but it aptly describes what Lanardo did to Antwone.
Both guys are good inside fighters, just Tyner is a better inside fighter. When Smith stepped outside, he did well, but his legs got taken away early and he barely boxed from the outside at all.
well, i watched the fight, and it was an OUTSTANDING one! From what i perceived, Lanardo Tyner might have had the fight of his life as he's turning 35. It was a make it or break it fight for him, it was said. Antwone Smith looked pretty good all around, and he had plans to infight Tyner since he felt that was his strength, and compared himself to James Toney. The problem was that Tyner seemed to be extremely under-estimated in the inside too. Honestly, Tyner equaled, if not even bettered Smith on the infighting. Even worse, Tyner was throwing in some amazing bodyshots that eventually gassed out Smith. The funny thing, Antwone did a good job outboxing Tyner on the outside. He was actually slightly taller w/ a reach and boxing was his advantage. Tyner's bodyshots slowed down Smith, and he didnt have the stamina to do any outboxing. Just wrong game plan vs Tyner. Tyner was under-estimated. And he was in GREAT condition. The boy is still a good prospect. He lost a tough fight to a B-class fighter using the wrong game plan.....
Showtime usually replays their cards throughout the week. Smith-Tyner and Jones-Garcia are both highly recommended viewing. The former was fairly competitive and produced an upset, and the latter was just complete domination beyond what anyone expected in Mike Jones' showcase.
Smith fought the wrong fight he needs to realize he's an outside fighter and terrific counterpuncher. He came forward and tried to work inside against a smaller fighter who wound up counterpunching him. Also Smith said in the week leading up that he wasn't his best and that he was battling a bug of some kind. I believe it too because it was said before the fight and i don't think was made up as just an excuse
