I know a bunch of big name fighters served in WWII. some even participated in major combat, like Barney Ross. I would assume with the draft and everything that at least some big name fighters went to Nam but I dont know of any off hand
Mike Weaver. He was a quiet guy anyway and, like many veterans, never really talked about it. But I'm pretty sure he was there.
Garland (Rip) Randall was killed in action in Viet Nam. RIP, Rip. Robert Carmody, who won the Olympic Flyweight title in 1964, was killed in action as well.
Yep. I knew Mac was a Marine but didnt know any details. Just looked him up and he did 2 tours and was discharged as a sergeant. Good man.
I read in a boxing magazine (probably Ring) about a former fighter (who was a promising Lt Heavyweight from memory) who fought out of Angelo Dundee’s 5th St Gym I believe, who served in Vietnam as a medic. After dealing with wounded men and seeing horrific injuries first hand he understandably couldn’t continue on in a hurt business like boxing afterwards. I can’t for the life of me remember his name and wonder if anyone has any idea who it was or remembers the article in question?
