I rank him P4P one of the hardest punchers ever, to me he's featherweight Earnie Shavers. Enough power to knock buildings down, lacking fundamentals for longevity or a superfight victory against historic elites. Unlike the acorn, little red won a title. Loved Danny Lopez fights when there were on TV, he'd paralyze opponents with his power. The fight where he defended against Salvador Sanchez was on network TV when it happened I remember at the beginning of the fight as the guys were bouncing around in their corners before the bell how sorry I felt for Sanchez thinking that this poor Mexican kid has family at home and his entire home town watching TV this day just to see him to be carried out in a stretcher. Well it turns out skill trumps power and Sanchez easily dominated Little Red totally beating the crap out of him. Still every round I was wondering when Danny was going to land that finishing punch. Danny, all swollen and ****ed up, was wondering the same thing I'm sure. Danny Lopez, win or lose a great warrior.
I'm a fan of Lil Red one of the most exciting fighters ever,One of the biggest punchers ever, had great heart and great stamina also had no defense whatsoever those qualities coupled with those flaws and his offensive minded approach produced some of the best shootouts i have ever seen, never saw him in a bad fight and despite his obvious flaws i think he would be a nightmare to many of the top featherweights ever.
Love Danny Little Red Lopez....he brings back memories of some of the funnest boxing memories that I remember. He was electric...and yes, a Shavers type of fighter...no he was much better than Shavers. An exciting, even thrilling fighter...
I was a huge fan of Little Red, from before the Tury Pineda fight. I was afraid for him in that fight, as Pineda was also undefeated (and I was 7 or 8 years old) but Lopez stopped him in 4. Looking back on it, I think a good case for the best of Lopez being behind him, if not when he won the title, then certainly shortly thereafter. He was also a much better boxer, especially early in his career (pre-title) than given credit for...in that he could move around pretty good but he did get hit. I hated Chacon for years for beating Lopez, and though I eventually gained a very grudging respect for him, it always gave be a thrill to see Chacon get his ass kicked. Never came close to forgiving Sanchez even that much. When he died I was 17 or 18 and more or less felt he had it coming.
One of my favorite fights of all time.....as satisfying as MAB-Hamed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEsxKUdy0gU
Danny retired from boxing at 27, still he seemed punchy in later times. Lots of punishment in a short career.
The Malvarez fight is my favorite...it's the quintessential Lopez fight...he gets rocked and then decked in the first...all in front of a wildly partisan Argentine crowd....enough to upset and rattle many a defending champ...but not Danny. He keeps his cool and ices Malvarez with ease in the next round...and he was so modest...and lowkeyed about the whole thing...no flash or bombast ever for Lopez..
The Man,The Legend giving his HOF induction speech, should have been inducted earlier but better late than never. [yt]eHlSgd5sSZI[/yt]
Wow, he's toast. He has deteriated since the last documentary video of him and bobby chacon. Both guys were punchy and raspy voices, bobby being the worst. Danny retired a lot earlier in his career than bobby, so bobby took tons more abuse in the ring. if Danny is this jacked-up now, bobby must be doing the muhammad ali shake by now. You stop and think about boxing for a moment, and boy oh boy is it ever a stupid sport.
