Rex Layne Vs Turkey Thompson. Thompson looks awful but he was at the end of the road at that point.

Wow that 's it .. I've read that Eddie Booker was terrific and had a short and tragic career ... I'd like to learn a lot more about Elmer Ray .. seems he had a very interesting career ... was a hell of a fighter, as an older guy fighting on near even terms w Walcott at heavyweight and Charles, essentially the best light heavyweight ever , again at the tail end of a long career ..

I'm not sure why Ray isn't on film. He was in there vs some famous people. One day, someone might be able to identify him.

Thompson disappointed me a tad in new reads. He was a front runner type, but not much on defense and he went down more than I pictured he would.

I just read about how Pastor defeated Thompson twice, once in a very wild war wth both men hitting the floor multiple times .. the more you read about some of Louis' supposed bums the more you realize there were more than a few decent fighters in there .. Bob Pastor seems under rated to me .. I'd like to know more about his loss to Conn ..

Supposedly he was doing well against Conn until he was hit low and that altered the course of the fight depending on which source you look at. I definitely think Pastor is underrated. Consider that he did well against Louis both times (what how he comes back against Louis in their second fight after a shaky first two rounds) and was on the verge of a third shot as well after his defeat of Lem Franklin but there wasnt a lot of interest in it given that he had already faced Louis twice. Certainly one of the standouts of that era's HW class.

    Correct Sir,

Louis just made some of them look like bums. As is the case so often when you have a dominant champion people like to say that he fought no one. You'll here this thru all Eras. Tyson "fought bums" Klitschko "bums" its never ending.

Not saying everyone Louis beat was a world beater but some of his opponents were very good fighters.

Pastor was a decent boxer type, who fought many of the top black opponents Louis did not. He also made Louis look pretty bad in their first fight.

If Pastor could floor Thompson, he's got a glass jaw. Like I said before I read some on Thompson and he went down too much for my liking.

Here's where I disagree, some of the " bums " Louis fought floored him, made him look bad, or had their share of moments until Louis power caught up with him. Exposing his chin, lack of balance, slow feet, and defense.

That never happened to Tyson until he was shot, put Tyson in with a " bum ", better stated a journeyman and he's blow them out! Pretty much the same for Wlad. These two had the luxury of explosive feet or range. Louis had neither and some defensive liabilities.

" Pastor was counted out after taking a left hook to the body. He was also knocked down for a 7-count at the bell in the 9th and for a 9-count in round 12. "

Shame there isn't any footage on some of those guys. Not sure if those fights were ever on camera or if perhaps the film was lost at some point. Elmer Ray would have been interesting to see in action.

Which fights (or fighter) for example are you referencing? I'd be curious to get your opinion on which fighter was a "bum" in your opinion that troubled Louis? Thanks.

I don't like the term bum. I prefer journeyman. Jimmy Braddock was a journeyman who happened to have good timing fighting very aphetic Max Baer, who looks like he threw his title away by not trying hard enough.

Braddock was out of boxing for two years, yet he floored Joe Louis and took another round from him before slowing down from getting hit. Braddock was neither big, nor fast, nor powerful.

A second example is Glaneto. Yes, he was ranked #1, but his record overall reads like a journeyman. And he lost to other journyeman, The facts are he was short, overweight and not much of a boxer. Yet he too floored Joe Louis.

I think both Tyson and Wlad would destroy the likes of Braddock, and Galento, and hardly get hit during the process with getting floored being an extremely remote possibility.
