Rosenbloom decisioned World Champion Jimmy Slattery to win the Light-Heavyweight title on June 25, 1930. He lost the crown to Bob Olin by decision on November 16, 1934.

Journalist Damon Runyon, writing about Rosenbloom’s colorful persona and unique open glove style of boxing, dubbed him Slapsie Maxie, a nickname that followed him throughout his boxing career. Upon retirement from the ring, Rosenbloom’s sharp wit and broken syntax brought him new success in motion pictures. He appeared in nearly 100 films during his post-boxing career.

    His professional boxing record, which began in 1923 and closed in 1939: 299 bouts—won 223 (19 KOs), lost 42, drew 32, 2 no-contests.

Rosenbloom was elected to the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1972 and to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1993.

Anthony Slide writes a fascinating history of the film preservation movement in the United States. After covering the dangers of nitrate film and the wholesale junking of film prints during the silent era, he documents the beginning of the archive movement in the 1930s and 1940s. You would think that the book would be filled with stories of heroic efforts to save films, but there are just as many stories of incompetent and egotistical administrators who did more damage than good. The American Film Institute did a good job for a few years helping archives to preserve and restore films, but it quickly became a political organization and mostly claimed credit for projects that it had nothing to do with. The book goes into detail into the "colorization" controversy, a process which thankfully has pretty much disappeared since this book was published in 1992. There is also a section on how Scandinavian archives have done a much better job of preserving their countries' film heritage. If you are a serious lover of silent films or the golden age of sound films, you will definitely want to read this book!

Rather weird, when you think of it that there's NO footage of Harry Greb or Maxie Rosenbloom..what the hell were the film people thinking about back then?

Sometimes when I can't find footage of a particular fight or fighter I think that there's some person out there unknowingly in possesion of Greb, Rosenbloom, Tyson vs Sims, etc, etc. When I find that person...
