I see he put up a better than expected performance against a heavyweight many consider to be a top-5 guy in the division (including me). Was this sort of grant gearing up for one more decent payday (although all signs seem to indicate he still has good money) or can Grant, even at 38, have a few more top-10 top-15 fights. Would he still be a good fight for an Arreola, or a Povetkin, or some of the other guys coming up, or was this just sort of a surprise and shouldn't be expected against any other top-notch, or close to top-notch guys?
michael grant would be a dangerous fighter if he had savvy. he has the first touch of a ******. he's a big boy but that isn't enough.
I dont think it was a better than expected performance. Adamek couldnt hurt him that was all about it. I dont think Grant actually won a round besides the 12th though he had a moment in 6 and 9. Grant could fight guys like Thompson, Dimitrenko or Helenius maybe. I think most of the smaller HWs would kill him on the inside.
Future?! Of course, yes! I see him becoming a pensioner and a grandad. As far as boxing his future was done when he got ktfo lennox....
1) Gatekeeper 2) Record padder 3) Easy-buck-grabber 4) IBU international champion of the west coast??? I dunno, defintely nothing too fancy in boxing
Now for a serious shot at the subject... He can definitely make money doing the journeymen and gatekeeper route if he wants to. He'll need to fight a lot more often than twice a year to make money on that, but it's there if he wants it. If he can go the distance, win arguably 3 or 4 rounds, cut and wobble the guy who the Ring says is the #4 heavyweight in the world, then that puts a great pile of lesser heavyweights out there that he has a chance to beat and make money doing so. Grant would get pummelled against the current belt-holders but that doesn't mean he can't have opportunities and paydays elsewhere. He can still hit, he still has a reasonable gas tank if not a patch on his prime, and he can absorb shots better than a lot of people suggested. Grant was supposed to get demolished and Adamek emerge without a scratch on him. I get the impression there are a lot of people pissed off that didn't happen and are letting it cloud their judgement.
Well thank you. And hey, I find Adamek a really easy guy to like; I really wish him well as a heavyweight. Who wouldn't? But call a spade a spade here, it was not supposed to be that tough and I'd rather spare Adamek the brickbats and give some props to Grant. I think too many people for too many years held up Grant as one big useless no-chinned joke, and now that something like this has happened they can't admit they over-exaggerated and are trying to compensate by instead laying right into Adamek. Which just isn't fair on either fighter. Grant's never going to be The Man, those days and chances are gone, but yes he has a future at a decent enough level of competition and money if wanted. That's the plain truth. Man, I've been soapboxing like crazy today...
